The reappearance of (some of) the "Disappeared"

On many occasions I have written about the outrageous detention of Iraqi
scientists including Gen. Amer al-Saadi, Dr. Rihab Taha and Dr. Huda Ammash
(al-Saadi most recently here). Today comes the news that Taha and Ammash
have been released from jail, along with 22 others (not including Gen.
al-Saadi as far as we know). All 24 were released without charges, with the
specious claim that they were "no longer a security threat" (as if they
ever ! were) (...) We (the American media-consuming public) are told in
every story that Dr. Taha was "known" as "Dr. Germ." No. George Bush is
"known as" "W". Dr. Taha was not "known as" "Dr. Germ" any more than George
Bush is "known as" "aWol". She was called that by the American government
in an attempt to demonize her and by extension the Iraqi people, and to
help pave the way for the invasion..

The White House seemed very upset with what happened in the Green zone,
when US soldiers "found" the jail of Jadriya while they were looking for a
15 years old kidnapped child. The images of torture and execution disturbed
the US government, who now claims to be the champion of human rights and
democracy. Even Condolencia Rice proclaimed that "the US does not torture".
They pretended that the Jafaari government had let them down with su! ch
abuses. How hypocrite can you get? They trained these men, spent 3,3
billion $ out of the 2004 Pentagon’s 87 billion $ budget to create and fund
militia’s like the Badr militia’s and the Wolf brigade. They don’t fool no
Iraqis, even when they hire people like Christian Bailey to plant false
stories in Iraqi newspapers. We Iraqis know what’s happening. The US bears
prime responsibility for the torture and killing of Iraqi civilians...

...Remember that, in the impeachment of Richard Nixon, Article 2 of the
three Articles of Impeachment dealt with illegal wiretapping of Americans.
It said that Nixon committed a crime "by directing or authorizing
[intelligence] agencies or personnel to conduct or continue electronic
surveillance or other investigations for purposes unrelated to national
security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his
office." There was no national security justification for B! ush’s illegal
NSA wiretaps -- which could easily have been instituted by following the
FISA law’s provisions -- and, instead of being related to "enforcement of
laws," Bush’s eavesdropping was indisputably in contravention of the law of
the land. And when a president commits a crime in violation of his oath of
office swearing to uphold the law, it is the time to impeach...

IRAQ’S electoral commission released partial and preliminary results today
from the last week’s elections that showed Shiite and Kurdish parties
dominating in provinces where they are the predominant group. The
commission, however, only released preliminary results from one province
where Sunni Arabs are the majority of the population. The results released
so far show that the votes were divided along ethnic and sectarian lines...

McCain says some torture justified

suggested Sunday that harsh treatment of a terrorism suspect who knew of an
imminent attack would not violate international standards (...) Asked on

Angry Iraqis protest gasoline price hikes

US Tortured Prisoners in Secret Kabul Jail: HRW.
