on end, whipped her with electric cables and accused her of having sex with
a stranger. Humiliated and fearful for her life, the 46-year-old Iraqi
housewife went before a TV camera and "confessed" to helping insurgents. It
didn't matter that her confession was a lie, Khalida Zakiya said. "If you
don't say what we tell you," she claims one interrogator told her, "I wi!
ll rip your clothes off and leave you naked in front of everyone." Another
threatened to sodomize her with a bottle, she said in a phone interview
Tuesday from her home in Mosul. Zakiya appeared on a much-touted Iraqi TV
program that airs confessions of alleged insurgents...

journalists that substantiated the widespread allegations that US-backed
forces are carrying out the extra-judicial killing of suspected opponents
of the US occupation. A report detailing their findings was published on
June 27—three days after one of the journalists, Yasser Salihee, was killed
by a single shot to the head as he approached a US checkpoint (...) The

...The Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’, the highest Sunni Religious authority in
occupied Iraq, issued a statement dated Tuesday, 5 July 2005 in which it
said that a new level of savagery had been set by the US occupation forces
in murder and violation of human rights with a practice that the Americans
had begun recently in their treatment of five Iraqis whom they arres! ted
in the az-Zaydan area of Abu Ghurayb, west of Baghdad. The statement said
that after having been imprisoned for two days, the prisoners were strapped
to explosives and blown up with such force that their bodies were reduced
to scattered limbs that could only be identified by bits of clothing and
any distinguishing marks they might have had...
