Militants Groups in Iraq Name Spokesman

Two militant groups said Sunday they have named a new spokesman to silence
those who claim to speak for the insurgency. In a joint statement posted on
an Islamic Web site, the Islamic Army in Iraq and the Army of Mujahedeen
said they had chosen Ibrahim Youssef al-Shammari as their spokesman. The
little-known al-Shammari appeared on the Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera
on Sunday "to silence all those who talk in the name of the mujahedeen,"
the groups s! aid in a statement posted on an Islamic Web site....

TOP SECRETS: Feds increasingly classify documents

Driven largely by ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the
federal government reports that the number of documents being classified
jumped 10 percent last year to 15.6 million. The numbers come from the
Information Security Oversight Office in its latest annual report to the
president. Meanwhile, the number of pages that the government declassified
continued to drop. Last year, 28.4 million pages were declassi! fied, a 34
percent drop from the previous year...

Revealed: grim world of new Iraqi torture camps

The video camera pans across Hassan an-Ni'ami's body as it is washed in the
mosque for burial. In life he was a slender, good-looking man, usually
dressed in a dark robe and white turban, Imam at a mosque in Baghdad's
Adhimiya district and a senior official of the Muslim Clerics Association.
When I first interviewed him a year ago he was suspected of contacts with
the insurgency. Certainly he supported resistance to US forces. More recen!
tly, an-Ni'ami had dropped out of sight. Then, a little over a month ago,
relatives say, paramilitary police commandos from 'Rapid Intrusion' found
him at a family home in the Sha'ab neighbourhood of northern Baghdad. His
capture was reported on television as that of a senior 'terrorist
commander'. Twelve hours later his body turned up in the morgue...

In his speech on June 29, President Bush characterized the Iraqi resistance
forces as terrorists, often foreigners, and as evil people, who, for no
apparent reason aside from the fact that they are evil, fight against U.S.
forces in order to prevent what the Bush administration says it works
toward in Iraq. Throughout this criminal enterprise whose beginning was
officially on March 19, 2003, but which has gone on since 1991, we in! the
U.S. have been told, ad nauseum, that the goal is a “peaceful, democratic
Iraq.” Our forces, in order to accomplish that goal, have committed
horrendous war crimes, incited sectarian antipathy and violence where none
existed before, and sacrificed our children in the cause of the wholesale

US occupation forces killed five Iraqi civilians on their way along the
International Highway to Jordan, Mafkarat al-Islam reported Saturday.
Travelers who were on the same road at the time of the latest American
atrocity told Mafkarat al-Islam that two Iraqi men, two Iraqi women, and a
little girl aged 7, were traveling in a ! car towards the Jordanian border
when the Chevrolet in which they were riding developed engine trouble...

being diverted to paramilitary commando units accused of widespread human
rights abuses, including torture and extra-judicial killings, The Observer

and hospital examinations of alleged terror suspects from Baghdad and the
Sunni Triangle which demonstrate serious abuse of suspects including
