Najaf, Fallujah Hit by U.S. Warplanes, Military Says
Bloomberg
U.S. warplanes hit targets in Najaf and Fallujah in a bid to quash
insurgents operating in the two cities, military spokesmen said by
telephone from Iraq. Air strikes in Najaf, south of Baghdad, where
supporters of Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr have staged a three-week
uprising, are ``ongoing,'' Major Jay Antonelli said in a phone interview
from Baghdad. Tank and aircraft fire hit targets in Fallujah, west of the
Iraqi capital, said Lieutenant Colonel T.V. Johnson fro! m outside the city.

Abu Ghraib: Ordinary folk or human aberrations?
Linda S. Heard, Online Journal Contributing Writer
—¢Everything, everything in war is barbaric . . . but the worst barbarity
of war is that it forces men collectively to commit ac! ts against which
individually they would revolt with their whole being," wrote the late
Swedish author Ellen Kay. If one goes along with the defense of "we were
simply following orders" put forward by the American military at Baghdad's
notorious Abu Ghraib prison, while images of them celebrating pyramids of
their naked, bruised, beaten and humiliated handiwork with grins and
thumbs-up, she may have a point...

Combat Training, Courtesy of Fallujah
Zainab Naji
Two young men from Fallujah sat in a house in the Baghdad suburb of Sadr
City, eating a meal of rice and stew prepared by local women. They had come
to this sprawling neighbourh! ood to give the Mahdi Army militia –
supporters of radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr - the benefit of their
experience fighting the United States Marines. According to these men, the
Shia militia needs all the help it can get. "They don't know how to fight.
We came to offer experience," said one of the “trainers”, who both declined
to be named...

Neocon Treason
Paul Craig Roberts, AntWar
...The failure of the U.S. occupation in Iraq has certainly demonstrated
the limits to U.S. hegemony. Despite limited armed opposition, U.S.
military forces do not seem able to control ! a single Iraqi city. If
rebellion were to become general or if Iraqis had effective weapons against
tanks and air power, the U.S. would have to withdraw its army...

America marks A first in Iraq: Female torturers and Army doctors will "Make
you last"
Mohamed Elmasry, Media Monitors Network
...But American abuse of Iraqi prisoners has marked a grisly first in the
history of torture -- the u! se of women to sexually humiliate men,
especially Muslim men. The recent and much-photographed fierce
concentration on men’s genitalia by female American military personnel
demonstrates a meticulously constructed technique of psychotic bestial
degradation. While intensely humiliating for any man, sexual subjugation of
the kind meted out in Abu Ghraib prison represents the worst possible
denigration for Muslim males, who have known only the morality and
traditions of a predominantly patriarchal society. Well done, America. You
really understand "those people."

Crime and Punishment

When the findings of the latest U.S. Army investigation into the Abu Ghraib
torture scandal are reported to Congress this week, no one of higher rank
than colonel is expected to be named as d! irectly responsible for the
systemic abuses uncovered in the prison just outside Baghdad. Meanwhile,
according to charges made by an ethicist in a major medical journal,
military physicians and medics in Iraq have been complicit or actively

What We've Really Lost in this Indefensible War
Jimmy Breslin
There were four Marines and an Army soldier killed in Iraq in one 24-hour
period over the weekend. George Bush, who does not like people who go to
war, probably will! say that they are not dead. As of Aug. 20, we list 952
of our troops killed in fighting. That is the Defense Department figure.
When the figure goes over 1,000, that can be devastating in an election.
But the figure of 1,000, so easily remembered, already has been reached.
That was on July 7, when a rocket-propelled grenade killed Pfc. Samuel
Bowen of Cleveland. The people keeping track at the Army Times newspaper,
which has given the best, and often the only, coverage of the war, made
Bowen the 1,000th. The Army Times, with no election to effect, properly
includes deaths in Afghanistan...
