      The Institute for Social and European Studies (ISES)
               would like to inform you about the
Master programme in International Relations and European Studies
    at the European University Institute in Koszeg, Hungary.

     The Institute for Social and European Studies (ISES) in
collaboration with Budapest Corvinus University (the degree issuing
institution) is providing students with the opportunity to obtain
theoretical and practical knowledge in the fields of international
relations, problems of small states in Europe, the Balkans,
international economics, regional integration and development,
political science, European culture and sociology.

     Koszeg is a special place to get deeply involved in
International and European Studies. The unique intellectual
atmosphere of the town provides you the possibility to study in an
inspiring environment. Different thoughts and experiences are the
results of the atmosphere, which cannot be found anywhere else and
is created by three main factors:

1. the unique political history of the region,

2. Koszeg is an ideal place to get an inside look at the effects of
globalization and

3. the effects of the EU in a country that joined recently.

Why study International and European Studies?

- You will gain useful knowledge about the EU and Central-Eastern
Europe in the context of economic and cultural integration, what
can be useful for decision-making, policies and programs at the
national and EU level.

- A large part of the development cooperation budget of EU member
states is channelled through the EU's various development programs
in which there is a need for decision-makers with integrative
development skills.

- The EU affects prospects for development through regional and
global development, access to its own markets and through the
impact of its policies.

- The EU is spending the largest amount on regional development in
the world.

- Major changes in global economic and political systems are
occurring since the fall of the Soviet Union. Managers and planners
of local development need the skills to consider global changes as
well as local continuities. We find that changing economies prompt
changes in social services and local development initiatives and so
there is the need to acquire the skills necessary to play a key
part in these developments.

- There is heightened national and international interest in and
concern with international and local issues. This results in a need
for people who can make decisions by knowing the international
processes and adopt them to national level.

- In recent years, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors have
increasingly worked to influence development debates and to share
information about their policies and activities; through websites,
publications, video and inter-active multi-media. Non-governmental
organizations have also become more sophisticated in using a range
of media and communication strategies to lobby governments and
multilateral bodies, to inform supporters and to build alliances
and networks. As a result the demand for staff with skills in
International and European Studies and an understanding of
international development issues has opened up a range of career
opportunities for graduates of this program.

Job opportunites include:

- research positions

- policy positions: preparing and coordinating policy, advising and
planning in local and international development cooperation;

- implementing functions: local project managers and staff;

- Public Relations positions relating to cultural and economical
development issues.

This programme should be of special interest to the following:

Economics, political and social science graduates, especially those
  who wish to specialize in the field of Central-Eastern European
  issues in theory and practice.

It is intended for people who are making, or who have the potential
  to make, a significant contribution to the non-governmental
  sector in the developing world as analysts, policy-makers,
  researchers or practitioners.

Those with work experience in the developing world, wishing to
  expand their knowledge of the role of the EU in international,
  regional and national issues.

Government officials and non-governmental practitioners interested
  in working in the EU on regional and cultural development
  cooperation issues.

State officials and non-governmental practitioners who wish to
  deepen their understanding of debates surrounding the role of
  the EU in a global context.

     The Institute for Social and European Studies offers a variety
of programmes and services during the academic year, which will
make your stay in Hungary a rewarding and enriching experience. You
will be part of an international student body of approximately 30
students and have the opportunity to meet outstanding professors
from around the world. Credits are transferable to most
universities.

     The programme is based in the attractive medieval town of
Koszeg, in Western Hungary at the Austrian border. Two semesters
are required on campus for course work, plus a third semester
elsewhere for research and thesis writing. Students are
accommodated in dormitories or apartments and all necessary
facilities (libraries, laundry, restaurants, swimming pool, track,
etc.) are nearby. Research requirements are built into the program.
Students can form groups to conduct research on a chosen topic. A
total of 180 credits (includes the credits for the MA thesis) are
required to complete the course.

Changing European Values, Philosophy, Psychology and Power

- Regional Economics: Europe vs. Global

- EU Diplomacy: From Theory to Actor

- Comparative Study of Communism, Fascism, and Fundamentalism

- Global Governance and Global Civil Society

- Security, Peace and Democratization in the Balkans

- History of European Integration

- The Role of New Europe in the EU (Foreign Policy of the EU)

- The EU Integration Policies: The EU and World Development
