Time to Scrap the NPT
Mike Whitney
There’s only one country that has ever used nuclear weapons. There’s only
one country that has used nuclear weapons on civilian population centers.
There’s only one country that has ever threatened to use nuclear weapons on
non-nuclear countries. There’s only one country that has over 10,000
nuclear weapons many of which are on hair-trigger alert for enemies real or
imagined (...) There’s only one country that justifies unprovoked
aggression (preemption) in its National Security! doctrine; allowing it to
attack any potential rival to its global dominance. There’s only one
country that currently occupies a Muslim nation of 25 million inhabitants
without any proof of an imminent threat, weapons-systems, or territorial
aggression. The purpose of the NPT (Nonproliferation Treaty) is to reduce
or eliminate the development of nuclear weapons. If it is to have any
relevance at all it must be directed at nations that not only have weapons,
but demonstrate a flagrant disregard for the international laws condemning
their use...

Iraqi academics in the killing zone.
The BRussells Tribunal urges for an independent international investigation.
Dirk Adriaensens, BRussells Tribunal
Dr. Ali Abdul Razaq Al Naas, lecturer in the media college of Mustansiriya
University in Baghdad and a political analyst, was shot dead in Waziriya
north of Baghdad at 00:13 hours on friday 27/01/2006. During a recent
appearance on a panel show, Abdul Razaq Al Naas, a Shiite, spoke out
strongly against the government's failure to improve security and t! he
economy. He often appeared on Arab TV talk shows to discuss Iraqi politics
and criticized the continuing US occupation of his country. As usual, there
are no leads into this assassination (...) Some of the killings are
apparently carried out by Iraqi police, and others by the Badr Brigade, as
can be read in the messages above. But the assassinations also take place
in the North of the country, which is controlled by Kurdish Peshmerga
militia’s. These militias have been financed and trained by the occupation
forces. The Pentagon spent 3 billion dollars, out of the 87 billion $
budget for 2004, to create militia’s & death squads...

GI Special 4B1: 47% Of Iraqs Want US Troops Killed [That’s Only 12.2
Million] - February 2, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
[If that number were willing to say so to some poll taker while living
under a U.S. military dictatorship, with occupation death squads running
around loose, you can imagine what the real numbers are. By the way, 47% is
12.2 million very pissed off Iraqis. How do you like them odds? T] Jan. 30,
2006 BY DREW BROWN, Knight Ridder Newspapers: WASHINGTON: A new poll found
that nearly half of! Iraqis approve of attacks on U.S.-led forces, and most
favor setting a timetable for American troops to leave. The poll also found
that 80 percent of Iraqis think the United States plans to maintain
permanent bases in the country even if the newly elected Iraqi government
asks American forces to leave...

No protesting!
Xymphora
The single most striking deterioration that has happened in the United
States in the last ten years or so is the loss of the right to dissent. The
United States government has always done terrible things, but through it
all Americans have always had the right to complain about it. The reason
that we still hear a lot about what happened in Chicago in 1968 is that it
was such an aberration (if you haven't seen it, you should watch the movie
'Medium Cool' some day). Kent State was another abe! rration, but I
wouldn't be surprised, the way things are going, to see another such
incident before the end of Bush's Presidency...

Hellfire and Damnation: The Washington Consensus for Murder
Chris Floyd
Last month, President George W. Bush murdered four children. This is not a
controversial statement. There is no dispute about the facts. Indeed,
Bush's own minions fully acknowledge – even celebrate – the deed. Nor has
the political opposition or the national media offered the slightest
objection to the principle of presidential murder. Strange, isn't it? While
the American Establishment is now convulsed over the issue of a president
orderin! g wiretaps without court approval, the same president's assertion
of the right to kill anyone on earth he chooses without charges, trial or
judicial review is readily accepted on all sides. Even when these "targeted
assassinations" go horribly awry – as in Pakistan last month, when 18
innocent people, including four children, were obliterated in their homes
by Hellfire missiles, as the Observer reports – there is no demur, no moral
shock...

Contrasting events
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Everyone has noticed the differential treatment between Cindy Sheehan, who
was both ejected and arrested at the State of the Union address Tuesday,
and Beverly Young, a war supporter, who was merely escorted out.
Incidentally, if you don't think there was a linkage between the two, read
this: "Young said an officer mentioned that Sheehan was removed earlier and
therefore 'it was kind of only fair' that she be asked to leave, too."
However there was a far more s! erious contrast between two other events
that occured in the past few days. In the occupied West Bank (known in the
American media simply as the "West Bank") yesterday, Israeli security
forces demolished nine houses in an illegal (yes, that's redundant) Israeli
settlement...

From the people that brought you Gitmo...
Tom Mysiewicz
The people that brought you Gitmo are at it again, and this time their
camps could be located right in the mainland U.S. These camps could be
activated in the event of an "emergency", such as a threat to U.S.
"national security" resulting from an attack on Iran and/or the expulsion
of the Palestinians from East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Chances are,
though, the camps may be populated not just with illegal immigrants but
with Moslems and others whose relig! ious beliefs are "incompatible with a
democratic society"...

US army battles in Sadr City
Truth About Iraqis
According to reports in Baghdad, several Iraqis have been injured in fierce
firefights between as yet unknown forces and US military forces in
Baghdad's slum suburb of Sadr City. Fox reported on the story of US forces
engaging fighters in Sadr City: Early Thursday, a U.S. helicopter fired
rockets into a crowded Shiite neighborhood of eastern Baghdad, killing a
young woman, after the aircraft was fired on, the U.S. command said...

Hypocrisy or Freedom of Speech?
Truth About Iraqis - The Daily Racist
...If it is not permissible to refer to Jews in this fashion, nor deny the
holocaust, why is it permissible to do that to Muslims and freely offend
Muslim sensitivities? No, not freedom of speech at all. Let's not kid
ourselves. It is hypocrisy of the most evident kind. And you expect Muslims
to sit still about this? Just as I abhor any racism against Jews, I abhor
racism against Muslims. Just as I highlight the plight of Jews under the
Final ! Solution and condemn their murder in unmistakable terms, I
highlight the plight of all oppressed and tortured peoples everywhere. But
you cannot apply double-standards and expect people to not react...

Bush to seek $120 billion more for wars
Money would pay for conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan into next fiscal year
The Associated Press
The Bush administration said Thursday it will ask Congress for $120 billion
more for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If approved by Congress, the war
money would push spending related to the wars toward a staggering
half-trillion dollars. Details of the requests are not final, but the 2007
budget proposal that President Bush will submit next week will reflect t!
he totals for planning purposes. The president also will ask Congress to
devote an additional $2.3 billion this year to prepare for a bird flu
epidemic...

The White House memo
Revealed: Bush and Blair discussed using American Spyplane in UN colours to
lure Saddam into war.
Gary Gibbon, Channel 4 News
Channel 4 News tonight reveals extraordinary details of George Bush and
Tony Blair's pre-war meeting in January 2003 at which they discussed plans
to begin military action on March 10th 2003, irrespective of whether the
United Nations had passed a new resolution authorising the use of force.
Channel 4 News has seen minutes from that meeting, which took place ! in
the White House on 31 January 2003. The two leaders discussed the
possibility of securing further UN support, but President Bush made it
clear that he had already decided to go to war. The details are contained
in a new version of the book 'Lawless World' written by a leading British
human rights lawyer, Philippe Sands QC...

Say Anything
Michael Steinberg
A short time ago, Los Angeles Times columnist Joel Stein wrote a column
starting, "I don't support our troops." It was a well-reasoned piece by
most standards, though Stein unthinkingly repeats the urban legend about
"peaceniks" spitting on troops returning from Vietnam. For his honesty, he
received a hundred "hate e-mails" on his (unpublished) personal e-mail
account in three hours, far-right columnist Michelle Malkin called him "one
of the most loathsome people in America," and in! two days the comments
posted after the piece ran to 159 pages. Yet Stein never really answer the
one question that you might have thought was most crucial: What does it
mean to "support our troops"?...

On the Necessity of Impeachment -- Part I
Kagro X, Daily Kos
Impeachment. The "I word." We've been over that ground more than once here.
And there's been something of an evolution in my thinking on the subject,
and probably yours, too. But it seems every time I pick up the subject and
start a discussion, I'm met with the same objections, almost always
centering on the mechanics of impeachment as opposed to its propriety or
necessity. I'd like to dispense with two of these objections before
beginning with the rest! of the series...

Cartoons and Hypocrisy
Danes Finally Apologize to Muslims (But for the Wrong Reasons)
RACHARD ITANI, CounterPunch
...Then the Danes, who must have felt left out, decided to go the Dutch one
better: a Danish paper published cartoons that are no less offensive to
Muslims than anti-semitism is to Jews. The cartoons were described by
Danish politicians and the press as not provocation, but a principled case
of free speech, although many Danish and Scandinavian newspaper editors are
on record stating that t! hey published the cartoons as an act of defiance
against "radical Islam." This is akin to these ignorant morons recommending
that the U.S. ought to nuke Tehran because that would teach Iranian
President Ahmadinejad a lesson. What free speech are we talking about here?
The law says thou shalt not utilize or publish anti-semitic language or
imagery. Consequently, Danish (and other European) papers will refrain from
doing so, lest they fall foul of the law and offend Jewish sensitivities.
The law does not say: thou shalt not offend muslims or use imagery that may
be deeply offensive to them...

Why ‘freedom of expression’ defence is questionable in the Muslim dispute
with a Danish publication.
Stuart Pethick, GlobalResearch.ca
...The publication of the offensive drawings has been made all the worse by
a French newspaper (Soir) reprinting them on February 1st. The newspaper
claims that in Europe it has the right to print whatever it likes, free
from religious threat. Many would agree that this is a noble sentiment, if
only the mainstream media of Europe would print what it liked, free from
ideological an! d corporate interests. It clearly does not, and the
republication of the drawings that have already caused widespread anger and
offence can only be seen as further incitement and a deliberate act of
antagonising Muslims. ..

The bloodthirsty Mossad secret service is behind the bombing of Iraqi Churches.
Al-Moharer.net
Informed religious sources in Iraq ascertained today that the recent
bombing of seven indigenous Iraqi churches carries the bloodthirsty Zionist
entity secret services - Mossad's clear cut signature. An Iraqi Archbishop
- who declined to give his identity - for obvious security reasons,
asserted in Baghdad that the explosions and the bombings which targeted
some indigenous Iraqi churches in Baghdad and in Mosul are the ! deeds of
the "Israeli" secret services, known as the "Mossad"...

'Marlboro Man' Turns Against War He Symbolised
Andrew Buncombe, The Independent
A cigarette hung from his mouth in the manner of John Wayne or Humphrey
Bogart, his grime-covered face showed the exhaustion of battle. This image
of US Marine Lance-Corporal Blake Miller, taken during the battle of
Fallujah, instantly captured the public imagination and for a while he was
known simply as Marlboro Man. But 15 month after that photograph appeared
in more than 100 US newspapers, the 21-year-old is back from Iraq, back !
on civvy street and he is talking about the trauma of what he experienced
and the scars he still bears, physical and mental. The once unquestioning
Marine is now also questioning whether US forces should be in Iraq...

U.S. occupation of Iraq assailed from all sides
As protest and opposition grow, war-makers step up air attacks
Monica Hill, Freedom Socialist newspaper, Vol. 27, No. 1
In December, accepting the 2005 Nobel literature prize, English dramatist
Harold Pinter railed against the war on Iraq and the criminal record of the
U.S. internationally, saying: "The United States supported and in many
cases engendered every rightwing military dictatorship in the world after
the end of the Second World War. ... The ! crimes of the United States have
been systematic, constant, vicious, remorseless, but very few people have
actually talked about them. You have to hand it to America. It has
exercised a quite clinical manipulation of power worldwide while
masquerading as a force for universal good." The masquerade, however, is
disintegrating, because people are talking — and acting...
