An Important Statement by the Defense Committee for President Saddam
Hussein, his Comrades and all Detainees in Iraq

...The trial of the legitimate President of Iraq – Saddam Hussein and
members of his leadership has become clear evident where grave and serious
pressures and dictations are practiced against the judges which led to the
resignation of two judges who decided not to betray their oath or to
relinquish the honor of their profession or to suffer feeling! s of guilt.
History will acclaim them highly for this. We have reached a turning point
after the appointment of a new judge who is partial, nervous and excessive
enmity. These qualities were evident in his dealing with the lawyers and
with our clients. The session of Sunday 29 January 2006 turned into a
farce. Security men attacked Mr.Barazan Tikriti inside the courtroom. The
defense lawyers were put under pressure and muzzled. The judge topped his
conduct by dismissing lawyer Saleh Armouti out of the courtroom. Anarchy
prevailed and the judge violated the established rules of procedures of any
court in the world. The judge also threatened to dismiss the defense
lawyers. He forgot or pretended to forget that neither he nor any other
person has this right, which is limited to the client. According to
information leaked from some lawyers, the attack against President Saddam,
Mr.Barazan and some lawyers was plotted in advance. The judge was hasty to
issue death sente! nce against our clients in response to foreign
dictations. He! was the best person inclined to represent such foreign
dictations (...) The Defense Committee does not intend to participate in
the proceedings of this court while it is handcuffed and restrained in
order to give legality to an illegal court. The Defense Committee does not
want to be a party to a prefabricated sentence...

Dr Kamal Said Qasir, also known as Kamal Berzenji, was kidnapped by the
agents of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) on October 26, and given a 30
years prison sentence by a special security court after a trial lasting
just one hour on December 19. His crime: writing two "insulting" articles
about the scandals of the KDP and Kurdish Regional Government President,
Massoud Barzani which were aired on! Internet on July 14 and August 25.
Qadir was born in a small village in south of Hawler in southern Kurdistan
and he immigrated to Austria in 1978 where he became an Austrian citizen.
He studied law at the Vienna Law School. He was obliged to flee Kurdistan
after the "liberation" of Iraq by the Americans because he demanded more
democracy and the respect of human rights in southern Kurdistan...

EFF's Class-Action Lawsuit Against AT&T for Collaboration with Illegal

against AT&T on January 31, 2006, accusing the telecom giant of violating
the law and the privacy of its customers by collaborating with the National
Security Agency (NSA) in its massive and illegal program to wiretap and
data-mine Americans' communications. In December of 2005, the press
revealed that the government had instituted a comprehensive! and
warrantless electronic surveillance program that ignored the careful
safeguards set forth by Congress. This surveillance program, purportedly
authorized by the President at least as early as 2001 and primarily
undertaken by the NSA, intercepts and analyzes the communications of
millions of ordinary Americans...

Jimmy Carter presented Iran with 52 hostages. George Bush has done a lot
better, sending 130,000 Americans across the ocean as guarantees of his
administration's good behavior toward the Islamic Republic. Last week,
Tehran reminded us of its ability to make life unpleasant for US forces in
Iraq by hosting Moqtada al Sadr for a high profile visit, in the course of
which he obligingly pledged that his militia, the Mahdi army,! would
retaliate for any American attack on Iran. His spokesman quoted him as
telling his hosts "If any Islamic state, especially the Islamic Republic of
Iran, is attacked, the Mahdi Army would fight inside and outside Iraq."
(...) But Iranian interest and influence in Iran are by no means confined
to the radical Shi'ite cleric and his fighters. SCIRI, the principal party
in the dominant Shi'ite coalition that triumphed in the Iraqi elections,
was after all originally founded and fostered in Iran...

* Between 35,000 and 135,000 Iraqis have been killed. This figure does not
include resistance fighters.
* Iraq's oil output has been unable to match or surpass pre-invasion

* In is 2003 State of the Union address Bush said Iraq had: The 25,000
liters of anthrax. Materials sufficient to produce more than 38,000 liters
of botulinum toxin. As much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve
agent. Upwards of 30,000 munitions capable of delivering chemical agents...

Cindy Sheehan: "Bush's Presidency Is Illegitimate!"

Cindy Sheehan is back in Washington, D.C. She appeared at a Forum, on Jan.
30, 2006, proposing the impeachment of both President George W. Bush and
his vice-president-in-mayhem, Dick Cheney. Sheehan believes Bush’s election
in 2000, by the Supreme Court was illegitimate and that his abrogating to
himself Congress’s war making powers to invade Iraq was unconstitutional.
Congress won’t do anything, Sheehan said, "unless we make them" do it...

2 British troops killed in Iraq, bringing country's deaths to 100 since 2003

A British soldier was killed in a roadside bombing Tuesday, the second
member of the country's armed forces to die in Iraq in as many days and the
100th fatality since the conflict began in March 2003. Three Iraqi soldiers
were killed and six wounded in a gunbattle Tuesday in Buhriz, a tense Sunni
Arab town 48 kilometres northeast of Baghdad. Police also said a roadside
bomb struck a U.S. patrol in Samarra, bu! t there was no word on
casualties...

the US plans to maintain bases in Iraq permanently, even if the newly

timeline for the withdrawal of US forces, though this majority divides over

Saddam greets Hamas victory

Lawyers of jailed former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein has said that their
client asked them to convey his congratulations to Hamas who won the
Palestinian elections. Member of Saddam Hussein's defence team Salih
al-Armoti told Aljazeera.net that "the president was pleased to hear about
Hamas's victory". "He [Saddam] said he sympathises with any party which
stands firm against hegemony, and does not compromise principles for
interests" al-Armoti said. "The ! president said he was pleased to learn
that the Palestinian people have finally been able to make a decision for
themselves," he said. Al-Armoti who heads the Jordanian Bar association,
said Saddam Hussein knew about Hamas's victory from his defence team.
"Although we had agreed with the previous judge Mr Razgar Amin to provide
the president and his companions with access to media to know what is
happening around him, our clients are still living in total isolation" he
said. "We are their only link to the outside world."...

Targeting civilians

I know there are certain things you are not supposed to say, let alone
think, but if blogs are good for anything, they are a good place to air the
unsayable and unthinkable. Much bloviation about Hamas concerns the fact
that it targets civilians, a fact that apparently puts it beyond the pale.
Some have pointed out that it hardly lies in the mouths of Israel or the
United States to complain about the targeting of civilians. Israel has
targeted far more civilians than Hamas, and the Un! ited States is the
current undisputed world champion in targeting civilians. Hypocrisy is the
playground of the powerful. There is a big relevant difference between
Israel and the United States, on the one hand, and Hamas, on the other.
Hamas is fighting a war of national liberation against an illegal and
immoral occupation. Israel and the United States are each involved on the
other side, the side of the oppressive occupiers...

Trading Oil In Euros – Does It Matter?

With speculation mounting over the possibility of a US- or Israeli-led
military attack of Iran sometime later this year, it has been suggested
that real motivation for US antipathy towards the Iranian government has
little to do with concerns that Tehran is developing nuclear weapons. Some
commentators have instead suggested that Iran’s real Iranian threat to the
US and its economy is that, in defiance of the US administration, it is
attempting ! to establish an oil 'bourse’ (exchange) in March of this year
which would enable oil to be traded in euros. This would move oil sales
away from their usual denomination in dollars and would, it is argued,
undermine the American currency with grave consequences for the US economy.
This internet-based debate is reminiscent of what occurred before the
invasion of Iraq when several observers, myself included, hypothesised that
Saddam Hussein’s decision to sell Iraqi oil in euros was perhaps one of the
reasons the US wanted 'regime change’...

...The scandal is the European insistence that Hamas must accept the right
of the "state of Israel" to exist in the homes and on the lands stolen from
the indigenous population, following the neo-con (in Europe we call them
neo-fascist) rulers of the U.S.A. in giving massive financial, military and
political support to the aggressors, and in threatening to cut off all aid
from the violently oppressed and suffering victims unless and until they
accept their status! as Untermenschen. I am disgusted. What happened to any
support in the "West" for freedom and democracy, which alone can lead to a
lasting peace?...
