Rumsfeld's Roadmap to Propaganda
Secret Pentagon "roadmap" calls for "boundaries" between "information
operations" abroad and at home but provides no actual limits as long as US
doesn't "target" Americans
National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Book No. 177
A secret Pentagon "roadmap" on war propaganda, personally approved by
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in October 2003, calls for
"boundaries" between information operations abroad and the news media at
home, but provides for no su! ch limits and claims that as long as the
American public is not "targeted," any leakage of PSYOP to the American
public does not matter. Obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by
the National Security Archive at George Washington University and posted on
the Web today, the 74-page "Information Operations Roadmap" admits that
"information intended for foreign audiences, including public diplomacy and
PSYOP, increasingly is consumed by our domestic audience and vice-versa,"
but argues that "the distinction between foreign and domestic audiences
becomes more a question of USG [U.S. government] intent rather than
information dissemination practices."...

On the taking of hostages
Claude Muncey
The reports began in 2004. The Christian Science Monitor's Annia Ciezadlo
wrote about Texas-born US citizen Jeanan Moayad's experience when US troops
wanted to question her 66 year old geologist father: They told me it was
because he was a Baathist," she says. "They told me my father didn't do
anything, but they just wanted to know information about another person."
When the troops learned her father was out of the country, says Moayad,
they arrested her husband (.! ..). Note, a person detained not for what
they have done, but to influence the actions of someone else. There were
other reports of wives of leading suspects being held to encourage their
husbands to surrender. Well those reports turn out to be true...

MOD accused of hiding real cost of Iraq war
GETHIN CHAMBERLAIN
THE Ministry of Defence has admitted that it issued misleading figures for
the number of British soldiers injured in Iraq after a Scotsman
investigation found that they were wildly inaccurate. John Reid, the
Defence Secretary, last week claimed that about 230 UK personnel had been
wounded in action in Iraq since the start of the war in March 2003. The new
figure was substantially smaller than previous estimates and would mean
British troops had a rati! o of deaths to injuries of roughly 1:3, compared
with the US ratio of 1:7. The MoD admitted yesterday that hundreds more may
have been injured in combat and that it was unlikely that injuries
sustained by soldiers during the war itself had been included in the
total...

Tomgram: The State of Disunion
Tom Engelhardt
This Tuesday, the presidential State of the Union Address rolls around yet
again. Only four Januaries have passed since the President used a State of
the Union Address to brand Iran, Iraq, and North Korea -- the first two
then bitter enemies, the third completely unrelated to either of them and
on the other side of the planet -- as a World-War-II-style "axis of evil."
It was the first great State of Disunion deception of the Bush
administration's regal reign of error.! Only three Januaries ago came the
second. The President stood before Congress and pronounced those sixteen
little words on his bum's rush to war with Iraq: "The British government
has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of
uranium from Africa"...

The Destruction of the World Trade Center: Why the Official Account Cannot
Be True
Dr. David Ray Griffin, Globalresearch.ca
...It is, in any case, already possible to know, beyond a reasonable doubt,
one very important thing: the destruction of the World Trade Center was an
inside job, orchestrated by domestic terrorists. Foreign terrorists could
not have gotten access to the buildings to plant the explosives. They
probably would not have had the courtesy to make sure that the buildings
collapsed straight down, r! ather than falling over onto surrounding
buildings. And they could not have orchestrated a cover-up, from the quick
disposal of the steel to the FEMA Report to The 9/11 Commission Report to
the NIST Report. All of these things could have been orchestrated only by
forces within our own government. The evidence for this conclusion has thus
far been largely ignored by the mainstream press, perhaps under the guise
of obeying President Bush’s advice not to tolerate "outrageous conspiracy
theories"...

GI Special 4A20 - Majority Says War Most Important - January 29, 2006
Thomas Barton
A majority of Americans are more likely to vote for a candidate in
November’s congressional elections who opposes President Bush, and 58
percent consider his second term a failure so far, according to a poll
released Thursday. Fewer people consider Bush to be honest and trustworthy
now than did a year ago, and 53 percent said they believe his
administration deliberately misled the public about Iraq’s purported
weapons program befo! re the U.S. invasion in 2003, the CNN/USA
Today/Gallup poll found. The war in Iraq topped the list of respondents’
concerns going into 2006, with 58 percent calling it extremely important...

Poverty, consumerism and anti-imperialism
Toni Solo
...One might also note that individual corporate initiatives backed by
warmongers like George Bush, Tony Blair or Gordon Brown can be regarded
legitimately as public relations stunts that do nothing to change the
fundamental causes of poverty. Iraq has been plunged into inconceivable
suffering and deprivation as a result of a criminally aggressive war. The
same people who are responsible for that unconscionable crime suggest they
are concerned about global pover! ty. No amount of sophisticated public
relations and commonplace mainstream media collusion can cover up that
grotesque contradiction and the moral fraud it ultimately represents...

Commission of inquiry into Bush war crimes and crimes against humanity to
release preliminary findings
Not in Our Name
The International Commission of Inquiry on Crimes Against Humanity
Committed by the Bush Administration met in New York City the weekend of
January 20th through the 22nd to work towards fulfilling its mandate: "When
the possibility of far-reaching war crimes and crimes against humanity
exists, people of conscience have a solemn responsibility to inquire into
the nature and scope of these acts, an! d to determine if they do in fact
rise to the level of war crimes and crimes against humanity." A prestigious
panel of jurists heard testimony documenting criminal acts and policies
allegedly perpetrated by President Bush and his administration from
prominent experts, former US and UK officials, and eye-itnesses, in the
areas of war, torture, global environment and health, and Katrina. Hundreds
of people attended and the session was covered by CNN, Newsday, all-news
channel New York 1, Pacifica radio, and other media...

Beating Around the Bush By the Bourse
Ingmar Lee
Only the uninformed believed Bush when he said it was WMD's that made him
attack, invade, occupy and massacre Iraq. Most of us thought it was to
steal Iraq's oil, but we were only partly right. What totally terrorized
the tyrannical Texan tycoon was when Saddam played the oil bourse card in
November, 2000. When Saddam started selling Iraqi oil in euro's, he
jeopardized the U.S. dollar's hegemony as the world's supreme foreign
exchange transaction currency. If this! brilliant idea catches on, it will
trigger the total collapse of the USA economy. The oil grab is a sideshow.
The main feature is the oil bourse...

IAN JAMES, Associated Press Writer
Cindy Sheehan, the peace activist who just announced that she is weighing a
run for Senate, plans to protest again outside President Bush's Texas
ranch, Venezuela's president said Sunday with Sheehan by his side. Hugo
Chavez, his arm around Sheehan's shoulders, told a group of activists that
Sheehan had told him that during Holy Week, in April, ``she is going to put

Attack of the drones
Lenin's Tomb
The US military's use drones in Iraq is at least now heard of, if still
languishing in obscurity for most, but today the LA Times reports that the
CIA is intensifying and expanding their use in other situations, like the
attack in Pakistan. These are used for targetted killings in Iraq,
Afghanistan and Yemen. The drones are deployed in "lawless pockets" of the
Middle East, Asia and Africa, where troops dare not venture. This, of
course, guarantees the killing of innocents, such a! s in Pakistan. The US
claims the right to unleash such attacks across the world as part of the
'war on terror', and there is actually a 'debate' presented about where and
when this can be done...

The Hamas victory
Xymphora
...Hamas is being described as a 'terrorist' group by all the media, which
is completely misleading. They are an army of national liberation against a
brutal and completely illegal Israeli occupation. The Palestinian people
are completely entitled under international law to resist the occupation,
and Hamas is the military heart of that resistance. Israel has absolutely
no right to occupy the land of the Palestinian nation. Who is the real
'terrorist'?...

Calculating the Risk of War in Iran
F. William Engdahl, GlobalResearch.ca
In the past weeks media reports have speculated that Washington is
'thinking the unthinkable,’ namely, an aggressive, pre-emptive nuclear
bombardment of Iran, by either the United States or Israel, to destroy or
render useless the deep underground Iranian nuclear facilities. The
possibility of war against Iran presents a geo-strategic and geopolitical
problem of far more complexity than the bombing and occupation of Iraq. And
Iraq has prove! n complicated enough for the United States. Below we try to
identify some of the main motives of the main actors in the new drama and
the outlook for possible war...

Saddam lawyers to boycott trial unless demands met
Reuters
A senior member of Saddam Hussein's defense team said on Sunday lawyers
would boycott the next hearing of the trial unless the chief judge
apologized for expelling one of Saddam's co-defendants. Judge Raouf Abdel
Rahman ejected Saddam's former intelligence chief and half-brother, Barzan
al-Tikriti, after he refused to keep quiet and called the trial "a daughter
of a whore." "Barzan was only explaining the circumstance of his illness,
asking for medical ca! re because he has cancer. Does that mean he deserves
to be expelled?" Khamis al-Aubeide, deputy chief of Saddam's team, told
Reuters...

Saddam judge sparks chaos
Steve Negus, Financial Times
The already troubled trial of Saddam Hussein descended into chaos on Sunday
as a new head judge’s attempt to assert his authority sparked a walk-out by
the former Iraqi president and his defence team and the forcible removal of
another defendant (...) "I am the judge and you are the defendant," Mr Abd
al-Rahman told Mr Hussein as he checked an outburst by the former Iraqi
president, who complained: "This is an American court and it’s rules are
American.?! 1;. . you cannot force me to stay."

Blair and Bush 'conspired to go to war regardless of United Nations'
PM knew President was only going through the diplomatic motions, claims new
edition of book
Marie Woolf, Political Editor, Independent
Tony Blair knew that George Bush was only "going through the motions" of
offering support for a second UN resolution in the run-up to the Iraq war,
it was claimed last night. According to reports in The Mail on Sunday, the
Prime Minister and the US President decided to go to war regardless of w!
hether they obtained UN backing. The allegations will undermine claims that
the final decision to go to war was not made until MPs voted in the Commons
a day before military action. It will also bolster claims that the
President and Mr Blair decided to go to war months before military action
began...

J'Accuse!
Ted Lang, Rense.com
...Constitutional scholar and legal professor, Jonathan Turley, a liberal
Democrat, said on FOXNews during the Clinton impeachment proceedings, that
all that needs to be proven to justify impeachment of the president is if
it can be shown that the president lied to the people. The failure to
produce Saddam's WMDs, the failure to end the Iraqi war after "regime
change" was accomplished, and the carpet-bombing of innocent, unarmed, and
non-combatant citizens for "murdering" Bush-hired! mass-murdering assassins
and killers, demonstrates clearly the Bush administration's aversion of the
truth, the facts, and the basic human decency established as justice...

US Army forces 50,000 soldiers into extended duty
Will Dunham, Reuters
The U.S. Army has forced about 50,000 soldiers to continue serving after
their voluntary stints ended under a policy called "stop-loss," but while
some dispute its fairness, court challenges have fallen flat. The policy
applies to soldiers in units due to deploy for the Iraq and Afghanistan
wars. The Army said stop-loss is vital to maintain units that are cohesive
and ready to fight. But some experts said it shows how badly the Army is
stretch! ed and could further complicate efforts to attract new recruits...
