The Senate agrees to Imprisonment without Charges
Mike Whitney
How can the Senate vote to ban habeas corpus?!? It makes no sense at all.
It's like voting for an end to freedom. And, yet, this is exactly what
happened on Friday, November 11, when the Senate passed the (Lindsay)
Graham amendment which overturns an earlier Supreme Court ruling (Rasul vs.
Bush) allowing Guantanamo detainees to challenge their imprisonment in
federal court. By a 49 to 42 margin the Senate approved the measure which
effectively depriv! es them of the right to know why they are being held or
of any legal means to defend themselves. None of the Guantanamo inmates
have ever been charged with a crime. The Senate vote ensures that they
never will. The action goes beyond a simple dispute with the high court's
decision to honor the rights of so called "enemy combatants". The vote
denies the prisoners any civil liberties provided under the Bill of Rights,
the Geneva Conventions or any other of the human rights treaties to which
the US is a signatory...

Baathist Web site says Saddam lieutenant 'is alive and well'
LIZ SLY, Chicago Tribune
A Baathist Web site that had earlier reported the death of Izzat Ibrahim
al-Douri, the most senior Baathist leader still on the run, apologized
Saturday and said that he was, in fact, still alive. There was no immediate
explanation for the contradictory statements (...) "We apologize to all
brothers and sisters," the statement said. "We found out a little while ago
from our brother Salah al-Mukhtar that this news has no truth at! all and
the mujahid (holy warrior) Izzat al-Douri is fine." Al-Mukhtar is a former
Iraqi envoy who runs the Web site on which Baathist statements are posted...

STOP TORTURE! Save Habeas Corpus at Guantanamo! (ACTION!)
judybrowni, Daily Kos
As you may know, many men who have spent years in detention at Guantanamo
Bay were sold to the U.S. military by bounty hunters. More than a hundred
detainees are on hunger strikes because of the hopelessness of their
situations. There may be a second vote on the amendment the week of
November 14. Please contact your senators right now and urge them to
support any effort to remove the part of Senator Graham's amendment banning
GuantÃ! ¡namo prisoners from filing writs of habeas corpus in court...

The War At Home: New Orleans, Public Housing, and the "Chilean Option"
Jay Arena
The U.S. military, in its desperate attempt to crush the growing armed
Iraqi resistance, is employing what Pentagon strategists call the "Salvador
option". To terrorize the Iraqi people into submission the U.S. is funding,
training, directing, and sometimes staffing, death squads--as was done
during the brutal counter-insurgency campaign in Central America in the
1980s. The U.S. imperialist state is betting that this strategy of terr! or
will effectively beat the Iraqis into submission, thus guaranteeing control
of the oil and allowing U.S. forces to be unleashed in new wars of pillage
from Damascus, to Tehran, to Caracas...

GI Special 3D12: " The Level Known To Cause Death" - November 12, 2005
www.militaryproject.org
...We've already taken more casualties than in the first three years of
Nam. In fact, just by wounding more than 15,000 of our soldiers, the Iraqi
insurgents have taken out a full Army division. [Close. Many divisions are
20,000.] And these aren't flesh wounds. These soldiers have had arms and
legs ripped from joints, eyeballs blown from sockets, and skulls crushed
in, permanently damaging gray matter. These wounded won! 't be going back
for another tour. They face a lifetime of painful rehab and depression...

EXCLUSIVE: US DEPARTMENT OF STATE FORCED TO CORRECT ITS OFFICIAL VERSION
Gabriele Zamparini, The Cat's Dream
After my last article BBC and Fallujah: War Crimes, Lies and Omerta' ,
(November 09, 2005) the US Department of State changed its version. The
following note was added the day after it was reported on The Cat's Blog
(...) that a US military publication admitted the use of white phosphorous
as a "versatile munition": [November 10, 2005 note: We have learned that
some of the information we were provided i! n the above paragraph is
incorrect. White phosphorous shells, which produce smoke, were used in
Fallujah not for illumination but for screening purposes, i.e., obscuring
troop movements and, according to an article, "The Fight for Fallujah," in
the March-April 2005 issue of Field Artillery magazine, "as a potent
psychological weapon against the insurgents in trench lines and spider
holes ..."

Black-ops in Turkish Kurdistan

...It is relatively rare for these black operations to be caught, which may
explain why it is so difficult to convince people of how common they are.
This is exactly what happened to the two British soldiers in Basra who were
caught red-handed trying to create some atrocity which would then be blamed
on Iranians or al-Qaeda or local insurgents or whatever group the British
had decided to defame...

Bodies found in Iraq town after US offensive - doctor
Reuters
An Iraqi Red Crescent doctor said on Saturday more than 50 bodies had been
found in the rubble of a town near the Syrian border which U.S.-led troops
swept through this week in an anti-insurgent offensive. Around 2,500 U.S.
troops and 1,000 Iraqi soldiers launched Operation Steel Curtain a week ago
around the western town of Qusayba. They conducted house-to-house searches
to root out insurgents and destroyed a number of houses in airstrikes...

Iraq War Vets Detail Calamitous Torture Blowback
Wayne Madsen
...Ford was not surprised when 60 Minutes aired its report on torture at
Abu Ghraib. He knew where the "kids" at Abu Ghraib were trained in the
illegal tactics they employed against the prisoners. In fact, Ford's
headquarters was Abu Ghraib. Instead of stopping the torture tactics, the
orders from Washington were to send "non-talkers" (Iraqis) to Abu Ghraib
for interrogation. Ford revealed that a special team of foreign nationals
were brought into Abu ! Ghraib to advise on torture techniques. The
physical stripping of prisoners was one such tactic imported by the foreign
national advisers. Meanwhile, U.S. military commanders said torture was not
occurring...

Frist, Hastert go to bat for secret war, secret government
Don Williams
...It's no mystery why trained dogs and other tools and techniques leapt
from Guantanamo to Abu Ghraib and thence into hell-holes around the globe.
Just look at a map. Our government seeded torture in Central America
decades ago, as I can show you -- most notably during the days of
Iran-Contra -- when the Reagan-Bush administration, against the will of
Congress, funded secret armies. Bush-Cheney apparently thought the season
was right for clo! ning torture and other secret practices from Central
America to nearby Guantanamo, then on to the Middle East. That's why so
many disgraced Iran-Contra figures have made new careers under Bush-Cheney.
Secret War requires Secret Government...

Politically Strategic Impeachment
David Swanson
While it would of course be good for the world for Bush and Cheney to be
impeached, convicted, and sent packing, would it be politically
advantageous for a Congress Member to introduce articles of impeachment?
And would it benefit the Democratic Party for some or all of the Democrats
to push for impeachment at this time? Or should they do it later? Or is
there another way?...

Wake Up America
Monica Benderman, Kevin Benderman Timeline
...Wake up, America. Stop believing in the illusion. Our soldiers are not
protecting our freedoms by dying - not the freedoms we profess. Men and
women are imprisoned every day for speaking their mind in this land of the
free. Soldiers died for that? Children are abused and murdered every day
for actions of parents who assert that they are free to raise their
children as they choose. Soldiers died for that?...

U.S. 'can't maintain Iraq troop levels'
JOHN P. GRAMLICH, UPI Correspondent
Unless the Bush administration significantly cuts American troop levels in
Iraq next year, the U.S. military's roughly 140,000-strong presence there
will become a detriment to America's national security, according to a
report released this week. In the latest instance of foreign policy experts
calling for the Bush administration to set a timetable for U.S. troop
reductions in Iraq, the Center for American Progress, a think tank headed
by! President Bill Clinton's former chief of staff John Podesta, Wednesday
said the future of America's military hangs in the balance...

US Now 'Crating' Prisoners In Dog-Sized Cages Flown On C-130s To Prisons In
Eastern Europe Interrogated by US Personnel, Contractors/Ex-KGB, Ex-Stasi
Wayne Madsen
Although The Washington Post failed to report on the details of CIA (now
Pentagon-run) "black" interrogation sites in eastern Europe, WMR is able to
report on the particulars of the covert operation. According to a
well-placed intelligence source who served in eastern Europe, prisoners
from Iraq and elsewhere have been flown from airport ! to airport in
eastern Europe on board C-130 planes. Placed in what were described as
"dog-sized" cages, the covert operation became fully operational after the
disclosures of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, Baghdad and Camp Bucca, Umm
Qasr, Iraq...

Amman Bombings: Corporate Media Revises Script
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
As more details about the Amman bombings emerge, the corporate media has
gone into heavy-duty spin mode to shape events to the liking of the
Bushcons and the Israelis. For instance, on the day of the bombing
(November 9), Reuters reported that the bombs at the Radisson were "placed
in a false ceiling," a rather difficult operation in a busy hotel and
demonstrating the fact the bombers, who we are now told are Iraqi
resistance fig! hters brainwashed by the dead cretin al-Zarqawi, would have
obviously required serious cover of the sort enjoyed by a state
intelligence service working in tandem with Jordanian intelligence...
