U.S. attacks Tal Affar plunging country into deeper crisis
Salem Arif, Azzaman
...The attackers are mostly U.S. marines advancing into the Sarai, the old
part of Tal Affar, which is a warren of old shops and houses. The onslaught
is described as a “joint U.S. and Iraqi” operation, but Iraqi soldiers are
too few to spot among the thousands of marines who say they are determined
to retake the city. The marines are advancing from four fronts and only
allow for civilians to leave while blocking entry into the city. B! ut not
everyone is allowed to leave. The troops now see all men able of carrying
arms as suspects and many of those attempting to flee have been arrested
(...) The head of the Iraqi Red Crescent in the city, Dr. Mohamemd Qassem,
said more than 90% of Tal Affar people have fled. “We are committed to have
them return to the city,” said the government statement. Dr. Qassem said:
“We have detected 170 cases of people suffering from the impact of a
curious poison which could be the result of inhaling gases"...

Jose Padilla and he Death of Personal Liberty
Mike Whitney
I had to sit down when I heard the Padilla case had been settled. I
literally felt sick to my stomach, like I was gasping for air. The case of
Jose Padilla is quite simply the most important case in the history of the
American judicial system. Hanging in the balance are all the fundamental
principles of American jurisprudence including habeas corpus, due process
and "the presumption of innocence". All of those basic concepts were
summarily revoked by the ! 3 judge panel of the 4th Circuit Court. The
Court ruled in favor of the Bush administration which claimed that it had
the right to indefinitely imprison an American citizen without charging him
with a crime. The resulting verdict confers absolute authority on the
President to incarcerate American citizens without charge and without any
legal means for the accused to challenge the terms of his detention. It is
the end of "inalienable rights", the end of The Bill of Rights, and the end
of any meaningful notion of personal liberty...

Mahathir Mohamad: U.S. and Britain are Mass Murdering Criminal Nations
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
...“Mr. Mahathir told the audience of some 350 diplomats and human rights
activists [at a human rights conference organized by Suhakam, the Malaysian
Human Rights Commission, on Friday in Kuala Lumpur] that the invasion in
Iraq was made on false pretences, and that the claim Iraq possessed weapons
of mass destruction ‘was a lie,’” reports Dawn (...) Mahathir had climbed
up on his soapbox after the United S! tates criticized Malaysia’s human
rights record (which is admittedly dismal—the above mentioned ISA routinely
detains political opponents) and declared that “the people whose hands are
soaked in the blood of the innocents, the blood of the Iraqis … the people
who ignored international law and mounted military attacks, have these
people a right to question human rights in our country?”...

SALAH AL-MUKHTAR SPEAKS (Part Four)
Malcom Lagauche
...Now, we are witnessing the emergence of a world dictatorship of the West
in general, and the United States in particular. I want to stress that
American colonialism has been practically defeated in Iraq and it is
playing with wasted time. America will admit that the occupation of Iraq
was the deadliest mistake made by the Bush administration, or it is the
worst mistake in the history of the United States...

"Blackwater Mercenaries Deploy in New Orleans"
spiderleaf, Daily Kos
This is incredible. This is obscene. Is this legal? Are they going to claim
these are "militia's"? Private contractors with the power to make arrests
and use lethal force. Not answerable to the people. The folly of the war in
Iraq and the lack of preparation by the Bush administration (and the
governor's office?) cannot be more clear. This is a dangerous precedent
America. I say we tell the fundies and militia members what's going on with
the me! rcenaries operating on US soil and see how they react to it...
black helicopters of the UN, pshaw, you've got the black helicopters of
Blackwater to deal with first...

brings injustice to all people, and as I speak, I will do so not only for
him but also in your name and the name of all people who have suffered

Contractors 'Run Loose' in Iraq
Jonathan Finer, The Washington Post
...The shootings became so frequent in Baghdad this summer that Horst
started keeping his own count in a white spiral notebook he uses to record
daily events. Between May and July, he said, he tracked at least a dozen
shootings of civilians by contractors, in which six Iraqis were killed and
three wounded. The bloodiest case came on May 12 in the neighborhood of New
Baghdad. A contractor opened fire on an approaching car, which then veered
into a! crowd. Two days after the incident, American soldiers patrolling
the same block were attacked with a roadside bomb...

Requiem for a Nation
Abid Ullah Jan
What do you think of these words: “Unable to win hearts and minds, the
invaders now aim lower. The overwhelming evidence is that …the occupiers
widened the war to de-stroy food production in rebel-held areas. The report
lists indiscriminate bombings, reprisal against villages and villagers,
summary executions, … theft of civilian property, desecration of mosques,
killing prisoners of war, wreckage of hospitals, assaults on journalists,
training children as spies - all violat! ions of Geneva conventions to
which the Soviet Union has solemnly subscribed.” It seems these are words
from some “Islamist” web site, which spew venom against the allied forces
noble mission in Iraq to motivate and recruit “terrorist” insurgents. But,
actually these are words from New York Times editorial (...)Editors of the
New York Times penned this editorial on December 30, 1984 in which it
regretted that the “Soviet method ‘works.’” It condemned the UN for not
doing anything other than “token censure.” ...

POLICE STATE IN AMERICA: Now Bush can lock up anyone forever without charge
The final levee has given way...
Siddharth Varadarajan, GlobalResearch.ca
...What this means is that unless the Supreme Court overturns this verdict,
the U.S. government can keep Mr Padilla, a U.S. citizen, in jail
indefinitely, without charge. Worse, the government will be tempted to
invoke this power against pretty much anyone it likes since the Appeals
Court made no attempt to verify the authenticity of the allegatio! ns made
against the prisoner. While the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) says
the judgment "does not authorize the government to designate and detain as
an 'enemy combatant' anyone who it claims is associated with Al Qaeda or
other terrorist groups", the bitter truth is that U.S. citizenship will not
protect individuals from being deprived of their liberty if the
Administration decides they are a threat to U.S. national security. Its
Guantanamo time for everyone. And since the war on terror has been
described by U.S. officials as "an endless war", the period of
incarceration will also be endless...

Massacre in Tal Afar: 147 Killed in US-Led Assault on the Iraqi City
Aljazeerah.info
Thousands of Iraqi and US troops launched an assault on the northern city
of Tal Afar on Saturday to rid it of members of the Iraqi resistance in the
city. The US-backed Iraqi government said it planned attacks on the Iraqi
resistance fighters in four other towns. “At 2 a.m. today (2200 GMT),
acting on my orders, Iraqi forces commenced an operation to remove all
remaining elements (of the resistance) from the city of Tal Afar,” U!

New Orleans: the specter of military dictatorship
Statement of the World Socialist Web Site Editorial Board
The appalling incompetence and negligence that characterized the
government’s response at the outset of the human tragedy unleashed by
Hurricane Katrina have now given way to ruthlessly efficient methods of
military occupation and repression in the ravaged city of New Orleans. For
four critical days, Washington proved incapable of mounting any credible
effort to rescue the tens of thousands of largely poor ! and working class
New Orleaneans who were left to their fate in the city’s flooded streets,
many of them losing their lives not to the surging waters, but to the lack
of food, water or medicine. Now the city has been inundated with troops,
federal agents and cops of all descriptions, turning it into one of the
most heavily armed camps on the face of the globe...

Rashid, who resigned his post protesting the offensive, was quoted as

Business Elite Ethnically Cleanse the Poor in New Orleans
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
...Is it possible the “business elite” in New Orleans deliberately
sabotaged the levees, thus flooding poor areas of the city and ethnically
cleansing thousands of poor people, most of them African-American? It
wouldn’t be the first time. In 1927, the so-called Great Mississippi Flood
was used to ethnically cleanse African-Americans. “As the flood approached
New Orleans, Louisiana 30 tons of dynamite were set off on th! e levee at
Caernarvon, Louisiana,” explains Wikipedia. “This prevented New Orleans
from experiencing serious damage but destroyed much of the marsh below the
city and flooded all of St. Bernard Parish… During the disaster 700,000
people were displaced, including 330,000 African-Americans who were moved
to 154 relief camps. Over 13,000 refugees near Greenville, Mississippi were
gathered from area farms and evacuated to the crest of an unbroken levee,
and stranded there for days without food or clean water, while boats
arrived to evacuate white women and children. Many African-Americans were
detained and forced to labor at gunpoint during flood relief efforts… The
aftermath of the flood was one factor in the Great Migration of
African-Americans to northern cities.”...

narrow-minded, surrounded by oil baron cronies, religious fundamentalist
crazies and right-wing extremists and ideologues. He has appointed

I just got back from a FEMA Detainment Camp
AboveTopSecret.com
I'm extremely depressed to report that things seem to only be getting
sadder concerning the people so devastatingly affected by Katrina last
week. Two car loads of us headed over to Falls Creek, a youth camp for
Southern Baptist churches in Oklahoma that agreed to have its facilities
used to house Louisiana refugees. I'm afraid the camp is not going to be
used as the kind people of the churches who own the cabins believe it was
going to be used. Jesse! Jackson was right when he said "refugees" was not
the appropriate word for the poor souls dislocated due to Katrina. But he
was wrong about why it is not appropriate. It's not appropriate because
they are detainees, not refugees...

Afro-Americans, oil is more valuable than you!
Yamin Zakaria, MMN
They say action speaks louder than words and it is deeds that often expose
the words of hypocrites. So, when the US government says, they love the
Iraqis, yes those sand-niggers, terrorists and rag-heads, then think of
Fallujah, Abu-Ghraib, carnage on the Road to Basra in 1991, economic
sanctions for a decade killing 500,000 Iraqi children and in particular how
their vicious racist media portrays the Arabs/Muslims in general. Likewise,
when they sa! y they are not racist, think of the centuries of slave trade,
mob lynchings, Klu Klux Klan (KKK), assassination of Martin Luther King and
Malcolm-X (Haji Malik Al Shabbaz), beating of Rodney King through to the
handling of the victims of hurricane Katrina...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 9 September 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice.
In a dispatch posted at 11:35am Mecca time Friday morning, Mafkarat
al-Islam reported that a short while earlier a US fighter plane had bombed
a two-story house owned by a local resident in the middle of al-Qa’im, a
city in western Iraq near the Syrian border. The al-Qa’im correspondent for
Mafkarat al-Islam reported witnesses as saying that seven people – ! a man,
his wife, two girls, and two elderly women – were killed in the American
air attack. The correspondent reported that the Director of the Emergency
Ward of the city hospital told the press that all the seven family members
died instantly in the attack and that the body of one woman, aged 80
according to neighbors, was still under the rubble...

The Green Zone
Patricia Goldsmith
... What we’re fighting for in Iraq and all around the globe is the Green
Zone, a rarefied bubble of corporate privilege and private wealth so great
that its possessors can create a separate, unaccountable reality for
themselves. Unfortunately, even with support for the war in Iraq taking a
nosedive, many Americans -- probably the majority -- still feel that they
are living in an unassailable Green Zone of affluence, safe from the
consequences of our actions in the wider world...!

Private Security and Mercenary Companies Patrol New Orleans
Reaping the Profits of a Humanitarian Disaster
Larry Chin, GlobalResearch.ca
The Wednesday, September 7, 2005 broadcast of KPFA's "Flashpoints" featured
a telephone interview with Malik Rahim, who gave a gut-wrenching and
shocking firsthand account of the staggering horror of still-neglected New
Orleans that he and other survivors are facing. In stark contrast to
increasingly optimistic mainstream media coverage (cover-up) about "impro!
ving relief efforts" and "rebuilding", Rahim exposed the fact that there is
no relief. No Red Cross, no food, no emergency medical care under a FEMA
lockdown that has kept any relief from getting into New Orleans....
