US War Crimes in Iraq: Manufactured Dissent
A Critique of Amnesty International's Report entitled Iraq, In Cold Blood:
Abuses by Armed Groups
Ghali Hassan, GlobalResearch.ca
...The cliché purported by "humanitarian" organisations, and Western
"progressives" that; "we are against the violence, whether expressed
through occupation or the Resistance", is naïve and contradictory. As
mentioned earlier, the occupation is the cause of the violence. Those same
people who oppose the tactics used ! by the Resistance against the forces
of the occupation grant the imperialist forces the exclusive right to use
brutal violence against defenceless people. The struggle for freedom and
liberty for all humans is a universal cause. The continuing brutal violence
and destruction of Iraq wrought by the US occupation exposed the true
nature and complicity of AI and Western "dissent"...

Rubber-stamp Roberts and the Geneva Conventions
Mike Whitney
John Roberts should have no problem elucidating the "separation of
powers", because according to him it doesn't exist. All power resides with
the supreme executive; a supposition that Roberts has supported throughout
his judicial career. Ah, yes, judges can still gad about in their black
robes drawing the reverential praise of the American public, but the final
word on matters of state and law is the president. Period. This explains
Roberts's recent ruling in the DC Circuit Court, when he voted with the
majority (3 to 0) that the Geneva Conventions do not supersede the
Presidents authority to conduct the war on terror any way he sees fit...

A Letter from Monica Benderman
Kevin Benderman Defense Committee
...Sgt. Kevin Benderman maintains his integrity by showing others how to
handle the greatest adversity with dignity and honor, and in doing so, he
represents the very values laid down in the constitution of our country
that he continues to defend with his current actions. I am proud of my
husband - and I stand with him in his conviction that, as human beings, we
must rise above violence and reach for a better way...

“Kristallnacht”; when the public said nothing
Mike Whitney
There have been numerous comparisons drawn between the Reichstag fire and
9-11. Both served to consolidate the power of the political establishment
and wipe away the opposition in a paroxysm of fear. After all, the
Fatherland was being attacked and the nation was expected to fall in line
behind a strong leader. We mustn’t forget, though, that the Reichstag fire
was just one of many terrorist strategies employed by Hitler to erode the
rule of law and reinf! orce his stature as supreme leader. There was also
the less renowned Kristallnacht. “On the nights of November 9 and 10, gangs
of Nazi youth roamed through Jewish neighborhoods breaking windows of
Jewish businesses and homes, burning synagogues and looting. In all 101
synagogues were destroyed and almost 7,500 Jewish businesses were
destroyed. 26,000 Jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps, Jews
were physically attacked and beaten and 91 died" (...) Didn’t we just see a
facsimile of this following the London subway bombings when hooligans
roamed through the Muslim areas of London vandalizing mosques and
intimidating the local people?...

CIA Analyst Roasts Bush
Nicholas F. Benton
Ray McGovern, a 27-year analyst for the CIA speaking in Falls Church,
Virginia, to a gathering of the Virginia Votes group Sunday, unleashed a
scathing indictment of the Bush's administration's handling of an array of
intelligence, military and human rights matters in the context of the U.S.
invasion and occupation of Iraq. He said the people that are currently
running U.S. foreign and military policy were affectionately known as "The
Crazies" during the Reagan and Bush ! Sr. administrations, and were "kept
at arm's length," never permitted to rise above middle management levels of
influence because of their radical proclivities (...) "We have a war
criminal as president," McGovern exclaimed, noting that Attorney General
Alberto Gonzales had advised him it was OK to violate the Geneva Convention
and the War Crimes Act by permitting the systematic torture of detainees...

London 7/7 Terror Suspect Linked to British Intelligence?
Michel Chossudovsky, GlobalResearch.ca
A British citizen named Haroon Rashid Aswat, living in Lusaka, Zambia is
wanted for questioning in relation to the 7/7 London bomb attacks. Haroon
Rashid Aswat comes from the same town in West Yorkshire, Dewsbury, where
three of the alleged bombers lived. "He is suspected of visiting the
bombers in the weeks before the attacks." (New Republic, 8 August 2005).
"Scotland Yard declined to shed any light on claims Mr A! swat was the
possible mastermind of the July 7 attacks." Haroon Rachid Aswat is said to
have played a central role in the London attacks: "Cell phone records show
around 20 calls between him and the 7/7 gang, leading right up to those
attacks, which were exactly three weeks ago." (Fox News, 28 July 2005...

www.militaryproject.org/
...The number of U.S. troops wounded in action from the beginning of
hostilities on March 19, 2003 through Wednesday, July 27 was 13,657, an

brought the total number of Iraq military and police killed from June 1,

Abu Ghraib abuse: new revelations of top-level involvement
Joseph Kay, WSWS
Preliminary hearings are under way in Fort Meade, Maryland for two
low-level dog handlers at the Abu Ghraib prison complex in Iraq. According
to testimony from US soldiers in the case, the use of dogs to abuse and
intimidate Iraqi prisoners is a technique that was brought to Abu Ghraib
from Guantánamo Bay, under the direction of a top military general
dispatched by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. The two US soldiers,
Sergeants Santos C! ardona and Michael Smith, are accused of maltreatment
of detainees. They allegedly used unmuzzled dogs to attack and terrify
Iraqi prisoners...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Saturday, 30 July2005 .
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice.
...The Council of Islamic Legal Rulings in al-Anbar Province issued a
ruling that was posted on mosques in the area forbidding parents to allow
their children into the street alone from today onward. The Islamic
religious authority said that parents could let their children out only if
they exercise supervision over them or allow them out near the doors of t!
heir houses so that they would be able to run home before US troops can
approach them. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in ar-Ramadi reported
that the Council issued its statement in response to the growing number of
incidents of sexual attacks on children in rural areas, particularly by US
soldiers...

IRAQ: Anti-occupation guerrillas grow stronger
Doug Lorimer, Green Left Weekly
...In 2003 and the first half of 2004, attacks on US and allied troops
averaged about 25 a day. “We are capturing or killing a lot of insurgents.
But they’re being replaced quicker than we can interdict their operations.
There is always another insurgent ready to step up and take charge”, the NY
Times was told by “a senior US Army intelligence officer, who spoke on
condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to make his assess!
ments public”...

entitled An English Plea For Peace With The American Colonies ; " My Lords,
this ruinous and ignominious situation, where we cannot act with success,

loudest language of truth, to rescue the ear of Majesty from the delusions

Lawrence of Arabia on insurgency
Xymphora
The Carl von Clausewitz of insurgency is T. E. Lawrence. From an article by
James J. Schneider, professor of military theory at the School of Advanced
Military Studies, U.S. Command and Gen. Staff College, Fort Leavenworth,
Kansa: ". . . Lawrence distilled six fundamental principles of insurgency
that even today have remarkable relevance. First, a successful guerrilla
movement must have an unassailable base - a base secure not only from
direct physical assault, but from a! ttack in other forms as well,
including psychological attack. Second, the guerrilla must have a
technologically sophisticated enemy. The greater this sophistication, the
greater this alien force would rely on forms of communications and
logistics that must necessarily present vulnerabilities to the irregular
(....)". What is remarkable is how closely Lawrence's principles apply to
the Americans in Iraq...

Iraq Sunnis Demand Return of Fired Leader

government's sacking of a top Sunni official and pressed for a rethink
(...) Dulaimi had received a letter from Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari on
sacking him from the post which he took up in October 2003 . He accused the
government of firing him for repeatedly protesting a deliberate crackdown
on Sunnis in the occupied country. "I have been chased out of my job
because I defend the Sunnis! ," he told AFP Saturday. "I am asking for
unconditional release of all imprisoned Sunnis and I demand that tortures,
murders and kidnappings targeting members of this community be halted. I
quite simply want an end to the violence," he said...

America will never leave Iraq', US solider says
Colm Kelpie
...Patrick's opinions are an example of the new mentality among many
members of the US military towards the conflict in Iraq. More and more
soldiers, some once ardent supporters of the invasion, duped by the false
claims by the US Administration about weapons of mass destruction and the
links between Saddam's regime and Al Qaeda, are now growing increasingly
sceptical of American military presence in the Gulf state. "America is
never going to leave Iraq,! " he claims. "We're building permanent bases
out there now"...

Leaking Scandal Encircles More Administration Officials Than Previously
Believed
Think Progress
...Now we’re learning that Rove, Libby, and others learned of Plame’s
identity well before journalists knew who she was. The newest information
asserts that White House officials learned of Plame after Walter Pincus of
the Washington Post wrote an article on June 12, 2003 detailing evidence
that existed prior to the State of the Union which should have prevented
the President from suggesting Iraq was acquiring uranium ! from Africa.
This information corroborates Robert Novak's claim in his infamous July 14,
2003 column that outed Plame which said the White House sprung into action
after "Walter Pincus revealed in the Washington Post June 12 that an
unnamed retired diplomat had given the CIA a negative report"...

Prison Abuse Decisions Came from the Top
t r u t h o u t
The prison torture decisions "came from the top," asserts Robert Weiner, a
former Clinton White House senior public affairs official. "No matter where
these prisons are, so long as our policy is the same, torture will take
place - closing Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib will not stop the outbreak of
abuses and torture." In an op-ed in today's Cleveland Plain Dealer, Weiner,
now president of a public affairs issues strategies company, contends, "The
orders to tort! ure came from the top down. In the pyramid of power, first
and foremost was President Bush's Jan. 25, 2002 executive order disavowing
the Geneva Conventions for the 'new' kind of war we are fighting"...

U.S.-run Baghdad regime can't last
ERIC MARGOLIS
...In fact, Iraqi resistance forces are growing in numbers and combat
effectiveness. We are watching the continuation of Saddam's much-derided
Mother of All Battles. When Saddam saw the U.S. invasion was inevitable,
his Baath Party distributed huge quantities of arms and munitions and
created thousands of weapons caches around the country. Entire Republican
Guard divisions and commando units were ordered to melt away before the
U.S. advance and begin guerrilla war.! Today, the resistance may involve up
to 200,000 active members, not the 20,000 claimed by the White House...

Iraqi women and the right to self-determination
Minnie Bruce Pratt, Workers World
As fierce resistance to the U.S. occupation of Iraq continues, both the
Bush administration and liberal Democrats continue to use the excuse of
“democracy” to justify invasion, the murder of tens of thousands of Iraqis
and installation of a puppet government. Now it appears that progressive
laws which had guaranteed women’s rights for decades may be wiped out of
Iraq’s new draft constitution as a direct result of U.S. violation of I!
raqi sovereignty. The progressive laws, instituted after the Iraqis
overthrew British colonialism in 1958, granted women the right to choose
their own husbands and to have divorce cases heard by a judge, among other
freedoms. The laws, based on liberal interpretations of Shariah, or the
Muslim legal code, stayed in effect throughout Saddam Hussein’s national
government...

Islamist Patsies Crawl Out of the Woodwork on Command
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
... Last month the FBI released an affidavit claiming two supposed
homegrown terrorists here in the United States (the father and son
al-CIA-duh team, Hamid and Umer Hayet) attended a Pakistani “training camp”
allegedly “located near the city of Rawalpindi, the country’s military
headquarters,” according to ABC News. It’s interesting how the United
States has no problem killing thousands and thousands of Iraqis and yet is
! helpless to do anything about terrorist training camps in Pakistan and
Afghanistan. But then camps such as Amir Muawia in Afghanistan and
Markaz-i-Dawar in Pakistan (created and financed by the CIA and
micromanaged by Pakistan’s ISI) have served well to spawn state-sponsored
terrorism of the corrective sort now unleashed on the people of Britain...
