The birth of the Shi'ite Empire
Xymphora
...Looked at in terms of the necessary arrangements in the Middle East for
the creation of 'Greater Israel', the neocon plan is rather obvious
(although it took this constant pushing of the idea of a war on Iran
coupled with the contradictory action of Americans in Iraq to make it
obvious to me). Neither Ledeen nor any other neocon has any intention of
actually attacking Iran. The talk of attacks is merely intended to keep
Iran in the hands of the radical theologians, who ! have been given a
Shi'ite Empire through the handing over of Iraq. You need no other proof
than the forced presence of the detested Chalabi, whose job all along was
to forge an alliance with Iran. The new Shi'ite Empire will completely mess
up the Middle East, and create tensions that will keep Israel's enemies
busy for years, while Israel slowly builds 'Greater Israel'. It is a
brilliant plan, which can only be foiled if pan-Arab nationalism can win
out over fractures within Islam. The two countries most in danger of an
American attack are Syria and, eventually, Egypt, and it is not a
coincidence that these are the two countries most associated with pan-Arab
nationalism. Nasser's version of pan-Arab nationalism led to the first
American support of his enemies in the Egyptian Brotherhood, the most
notorious manifestation of which is now called al Qaeda, so you can see how
the world fits together...

I found myself...
Khalid Jarrar, Tell Me a Secret
...I learned also the value of freedom, now just looking from the window or
going out in the street is a lot of fun to me, I learned to appreciate
freedom.
May God free everyone that is under such great injustice, and send them
back home to their families and friends, about us, we will do what we can
to make sure that happens, any kind of help that you can offer, any legal
help or support from human right groups will be much appreciated and
evaluated, we must do all we can to try to get some rights to those
arrested, and being arrested in occupied Iraq, everyday...

FLASHBACK: German TV report on Torture and Abuse of Child Detainees
Traprock Peace Center
...He was full of fear, very alone. He had the thinnest little arms that I
have ever seen. His whole body shook. His wrists were so thin that we could
not put handcuffs on him. As soon as I saw him for the first time and led
him to the interrogation, I felt sorry for him. The interrogation
specialists doused him with water and put him in a truck. Then they drove
with him throughout the night, and at that time it was very, ! very cold.
Then they smeared him with mud and showed him to his likewise imprisoned
father. With him [the father] they had tried out other interrogation
methods. But they had not succeeded in making him talk. The interrogation
specialists told me that after the father had seen his son in that
condition, it broke his heart. He wept and promised to tell them what they
wanted to know...

Burying Blair; post-mortem for the prissy PM
Mike Whitney
... Blair has spent the better part of the last 5 years affixed to Bush
like a tick on a rhino; riding piggy-back on the infamy of his
Crawford-twin. Now, he’s even taken on the apocalyptic lingo of his mentor;
braying about “evil ideology” and the “defense of civilization” at every
opportunity. Imitation may be the highest form of flattery, but in Blair’s
case it just reinforces the suspicion that he’s a hapless poodle devoid of
personal resolve or inner ! fortitude. Blair is worse than Bush; a fatuous
charlatan who’s undergone so many political transformations he’s like a
withered starlet awaiting her Hollywood come-back. He started out with
lofty intentions and grand ideals and was quickly swallowed up by
compromise, corruption and an all-consuming vanity. He’s become a tattered
coat on a stick; flailing away at the ether to no affect; an empty gourd of
a man; pallid and soulless; buffeted about by every political headwind.
Burying Blair is a mere formally; he died years ago...

BAL-LA AL MOUSS
Malcom Lagauche
...The term "quagmire" was often used to describe Vietnam. When it was
hinted that Iraq may turn into a quagmire, the hair on the backs of the
necks of administration officials bristled. "You can’t compare Vietnam to
Iraq," they often shrieked. Today, the term quagmire is precise. Let’s look
at this from an Arab point of view. A couple of hours ago, an
Iraqi-American friend visited me. He called the occupation and resistance,
"bal-la al mouss." Then he explained, "This means someon! e who has a razor
in his throat. He can not spit it out and he can not swallow it." A great
analogy. I would say, "fucked if he does and fucked if he doesn’t." Which
ever of the three terms one chooses, it is apparent that the U.S. is
cornered in Iraq and will be for some time. The resistance has led many
people to write about its origins. I have stated many times my assessment
that it was planned well before March 2003 by the Ba'ath leadership...

Death of a Brazilian or how to massage the facts to fit the crime
William Bowles, I'n'I
As more information has come to light on the circumstances surrounding the
assassination of the unfortunate Brazilian, it is abundantly clear that
from the moment he stepped out of his apartment building in Tulse Hill to
go to his job as an electrician, Menazes was a dead man. In all likelihood,
the real scenario is as follows: The block of flats is under surveillance
by a team of police no doubt based on ‘information received! ’...

eXile Busts Bug-Brained Columnist
The eXile
Two weeks ago, Mark Yost, columnist for the Pioneer Press in St. Paul,
Minnesota, achieved the incredible: he wrote a pro-Iraq-war piece so
grotesquely offensive that it caused even his normally-cowered colleagues
to blow a fuse. Yost's column accused American journalists in Iraq of "bad
reporting." Even though Yost has never been to Iraq, nonetheless, as he
wrote, "I know the reporting's bad because I know people in Iraq." Who does
he know? "A Marine colonel buddy [who! ] just finished a stint overseeing
the power grid." (...) Even Yost's own Pi-Press coworker, Chuck Laszewski,
wrote, "I am embarrassed to call you my colleague." We felt that poor Mark
Yost was getting trampled on by the elitist liberal media, and that he
needed a little boosting from the Silent Majority of decent, patriotic
Americans. Posing as Johnny Rico (the name of the hero in the fascist flick
Starship Troopers), we sent Yost this morale-boosting email, just to see if
the bug-brained bozo would bite. Here's our email...

Iraq fires top Sunni official
AFP
A leading Sunni official in Iraq says he has been sacked by the government
over his outspoken complaints against the killings and arrests of members
of his community by the police. Adnan Dulaimi, head of the Waqf, or
religious endowment authority in Iraq, said he had received a letter from
Iraq's Shiite Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari on Tuesday announcing his
replacement in the post. "I have been chased out of my job because I defend
the Sunnis," Dulaimi said...

Cheney's boundless Iraq profiteering
The Age - Liberty Forum
Things are going well in Iraq for the invaders. Well, at least for some
people, such as US Vice-President Richard Cheney. He is receiving more than
$US1 million ($A1.3 million) a year from Halliburton, the company of which
he was CEO from 1995 to 2000, in "deferred remuneration" while he is VP. He
is worth every penny. Last week, two Democrat senators and a house member
wrote to Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld asking if he knew about
Halliburton's ! latest money-making dodge in Iraq...

A Summer of Double Super Secrecy
Fingerprints of Power
JACK Z. BRATICH, CounterPunch
...One of the biggest mysteries of the early summer was eventually lost
amid the shuffle of other major stories. The Downing Street Memo (DSM) was
remarkable not for its content but for the fact that so little attention
was paid to it by mainstream media. Pundits spent more time dismissing the
memo than following up on it. Christopher Hitchens, that neo-centrist
perception manager, added to his portfolio on dissent-bash! ing with a
piece on the DSM as "conspiracy theory."...

The face of Iraq: Will new Constitution increase their misery?
ASHTAR ANALEED MARCUS, Religion News Service
With an Aug. 15 deadline looming for completion of a permanent constitution
in Iraq, the country's religious minorities are increasingly fearful that
it will create an Islamic government that doesn't protect their rights. In
the draft constitution, the role of Islam in the state has changed from ''a
form of legislation'' to ''a main form of legislation,'' said Nina Shea of
the Center for Religious Freedom. ! In addition, a proposal has been made
to impose Shariah law, the strict and conservative Islamic law, above
women's rights and the bill of rights, Shea said...

GI Special 3C6: "I Have Never Seen A Freer Man" .- July 30, 2004
www.militaryproject.org/
When Sgt. Kevin Benderman went to Iraq on March of 2003, he saw the
destruction of a nation, he saw a little girl with a burnt arm asking the
soldiers for help they were ordered not to provide, he saw people drinking
water from mud puddles, and he saw that Iraqis were regular people, just
like himself, and that our military should not bring destruction to that
country. What Sgt. Benderman saw in Iraq changed him in a way so !
profound, that after ten impeccable years in the Army, he decided to apply
for conscientious objection. But Sgt. Benderman also spoke truth to the
people about what is going on in Iraq, and he spoke about how the war is
not destroying Iraq alone, but our own country as well. He spoke of how
American soldiers are dehumanized by the war...

The Permanent Role of the U.S. Military in Iraq
Stan Moore, MMN
...So, what will the permanent role of the American military in Iraq be? It
will be at least two-fold, and will not doubt still require a permanent
force of thousands of soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen, just like we
have in Korea and other places of the world where conflict is possible. The
U.S. military will largely consist of aviation units and airborne infantry
to guard oil infrastructure from the air and to act as a strategic support
of the! Iraqi military in guarding the U.S. vetted government of Iraq.
Attack helicopters and jet fighters and bombers will be present in Iraq for
the long-term to guard the oil wells and pipelines by relentless
patrolling. They will guard the Green Zone. They are being able to punish
Iraqis for fighting the illegitimate government, such as by more bombing of
Fallujah...

Key No 10 aides were split over war

the prime minister. Key Downing Street advisers including Alastair
Campbell, former director of communications, and Baroness Morgan, former
director of political and government relations, are revealed to have had
“private reservations” about the prime minister’s strategy. The dis!

Amid “civil war” warnings, Rumsfeld flies to Iraq
Bill Van Auken, WSWS
...Washington has no intention of withdrawing its military from Iraq. It
invaded the country in 2003 based upon longstanding plans to assert US
hegemony in the oil-rich Persian Gulf by means of military power. It has
not abandoned this objective, the steady loss of life and the $1
billion-a-week costs of the occupation notwithstanding. Among the issues
that Rumsfeld indicated he was pursuing in his talks with the Iraqi interim
regime is the ne! gotiation of a new agreement—either through another
United Nations resolution or the conclusion of a bilateral “status of force
agreement” between Baghdad and Washington. The aim is to legalize the
presence of US troops in the country into the indefinite future and assure
their immunity for war crimes prosecution...

Juan Cole, Informed Comment
Maher al-Thanoon of Reuters reports that one thousand Sunni Arabs staged a

Lenin's ‘Imperialism’ and the Downing Street memo
Fred Goldstein , Workers World
...The war in Iraq is the latest in a long series of British colonial
crimes. To put things in perspective, the people of Britain, who are
understandably grieving and in shock, should recall the blazing headlines
of a month ago about the Down ing Street “memos” leaked to the world press.
In these documents are found a cynical, Machiavellian series of schemes
secretly devised by the British government to frame up Saddam Hussein,
conju! re up a legal justification and political strategy to deceive the
British public, and carry out a brutal colonial war against a sovereign
Middle Eastern nation under the leadership of U.S. imperialism. All this
was done while the Blair regime was pretending it was seeking to avoid
war...
