Signs of U.S. defeat in Iraq adventure
John Catalinotto
...The signs from outside Iraq point even more to a potential collapse of
U.S. imperialism's aggressive adventure. George W. Bush and Britain's Tony
Blair kept proclaiming that the only thing that would defeat the U.S.-UK
resolve to "stay the course" in Iraq was the loss of will at home. Their
statements had a prophetic ring. On July 6, newspapers reported that top
Pentagon officers were thinking of dropping the U.S. strategy of being
"able to fight two wars! at the same time." This change of attitude has
been imposed on them by the Iraqi resistance, which is showing that the
U.S. Army can't win even one war against a guerrilla army backed by the
population, even under the difficult conditions that exist for the Iraqis...

Fathers and mothers of the Americans killed in the Iraq war talk to
al-‘Arab al-Yawm.
Hada Sarha
...“Let Bush know that we won’t allow that my son died for an unjust war.
Michael died with honor in a war with no honor.” Mitchell added, “I would
like to meet Bush to stop his madness, because concealing the number of
American dead and the extent of damage done in Iraq only makes the war
easier for those trying to conceal the truth.” Mitchell says that he is
working with large groups of Americans who have also los! t their sons or
who sent their children off to fight in Iraq and who are trying to stop
this war, end the occupation of Iraq, and let the Iraqis govern
themselves...

Blood On The Tracks -- WAR, INSANITY, & TERRORISM
Grace Reid
...How about we stop the insanity. How about we hold criminals accountable.
That means GW Bush and his whole crime family administration. That means
terrorists, that means all of them. If terrorists are conceived of as the
insane other, then there will be no end. If the war criminals who are
driving the US & UK policy of perpetual war in the Middle East are not
brought to justice, it is because insanity that is organized to that degree
of sophistica! tion, with that much built-in profit incentives cannot be
stopped because the people, in their confusion, have been taken over by
fear, terror, and newspeak...

From No Man’s Land to Displacement
Dahr Jamail, Left Turn Magazine
...Kurdish-Iranian refugees have a long history of suffering (...) Many of
them fled to Iraq, where the regime of Saddam Hussein placed them in the
al-Tash refugee camp, located 80 miles west of Baghdad, which held over
12,000 Iranian Kurds. Many of these refugees, after the US-led invasion of
Iraq in spring of 2003, said they were threatened by armed groups and told
they had to leave. Several refugees I interviewed in No Man’s Land camp
said they! were instructed to leave Al-Tash by the US-backed Iraqi
government. Palestinians, Iraqis, Jordanians and Syrian refugees were also
in the mix...

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEIR “TERRORISM” AND OUR “WAR”?
Freedom Liberation Movement
...The invasion of Iraq provides a good example of how the West is run by
double standards. It undoubtedly makes the responsible political and
military leaders of America and Britain guilty of the first three
indictments handed down by the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal
against the principle Nazi defendants: 1) Conspiracy to wage aggressive
war; 2) A crime against peace: the planning, preparation, initiation and!
waging of a war of aggression; and 3) War crimes: violations of the laws or
customs of war, including, but not limited to - murder and ill-treatment of
members of the civilian population in occupied territory; murder or
ill-treatment of prisoners of war; plunder of public or private property;
and wanton destruction of cities, towns, or villages, or devastation not
justified by military necessity...

What was Judith Miller Up To?
William E. Jackson, Jr., E&P
...But Rich later found ground in reality when he wrote that the scandal
began with the sending of American men and women to war in Iraq based on
twisted intelligence. Unlike many of Miller's apologists, he recalled that
"Judy Miller was one of two reporters responsible for a notoriously
credulous front-page Times story" (with Michael Gordon in September 2002)
that enabled the Bush Administration's propaganda campaign to hype the
threat of Saddam's WMD. ! This was just one of her error-ridden
contributions to the cause of invasion. Demonstrating a singular lack of
propriety, one of the most insensitive comments of the past week came from
Miller herself when she told the judge after he sentenced her to jail: if
U.S. troops could risk death in Iraq, "surely, I can face prison to defend
a free press"...

BACK TO THE LIE
Michael Rivero, WhatReallyHappened.com
As the dust settles in London, and Karl Rove dances the Potomac Two-step,
the time has come for Americans and the British to refocus on the far
greater crime of a head of state who has lied to trick the people into a
war of conquest. I cannot speak for Great Britain, but in the United
States, the Constitution does not explicitly authorize the government to
lie to the people and the tenth amendment prohibits the government from
arrogating that right to itself.! Certainly the President is not allowed to
lie to the United States Congress. Yet both of these crimes have undeniably
happened, in both these nations...

9/11-PNAC, 9/11-PNAC
SHOULD BE THE #1 TOPIC OF DISCUSSION
Jesse - Editor, TvNewsLIES.org
...We discuss the Iraq war as if the plans to invade Iraq were suddenly
thought of on 9/11. We do the same with the Patriot Act. We do the same
with the war in Afghanistan. We do the same for the continual assault on
our Constitution. We do the same for the unprecedented rise in government
secrecy (which actually started prior to 9/11, with Cheney's secret energy
policy meetings). As a matter of fact, the administration ! is doing just
about anything it wants, in secret, using the excuse of 9/11. This
unlimited power is a dream come true for the PNAC cabal. The media
constantly repeat the neocon mantra that 9/11 justifies all of this
unchecked power. Nothing can be further from the truth. 9/11 is not the
reason the Bush/PNAC agenda took shape, it is the excuse for its
implementation. It was not a response to the events of 9/11. It was waiting
in the wings for an event like 9/11 to breath life into it much like the
bolts of lightening that brought life to the Frankenstein monster...

A Police State
Greg Rollins, Electronic Iraq
...Recently a new fear has risen; fear of the Iraqi Special Forces (ISF).
The ISF are a couple different brigades: the Wolf Brigade and Al Hussain
Brigade. They are U.S. trained and work closely with the U.S. military,
carrying out house raids, sweeps and major operations. People say they are
brutal and that the Wolf Brigade is made up of many anti-Saddam Iranians
from a militia called the Badr Brigade. An official from the Interior
Ministry told CPT that approval for ! these Brigades' violent behaviour
goes all the way up to the U.S. Embassy. One family told CPT their three
brothers were arrested by the Wolf Brigade one night and the next evening
they saw the brothers on TV looking beaten and confessing to crimes they
did not commit. There are also stories about people being arrested by one
of these brigades and found dead at the side of the road a few days later...

Tomgram: Nick Turse on Cyberstalking the Recruitable Teen
Tom Engelhardt & Nick Turse
...It's been a tough year for the U.S. military. But you wouldn't know it
from the Internet, now increasingly packed with slick, non-military looking
websites of every sort that are lying in wait for curious teens (or their
exasperated parents) who might be surfing by. On the ground, the military
may be bogged down in a seemingly interminable mission that was supposedly
"accomplished" back on May 1, 2003, but on the Web it's s! till a
be-all-that-you-can-be world of advanced career choices, peaceful pursuits,
and risk-free excitement...

Plame games originated with Judith Miller
Ahmed Amr, MMN
No one is suggesting that Sulzberger or Miller should be deprived of the
right to advocate total war – all the time. That’s what the First Amendment
is all about. But neither Sulzberger nor Miller has a right to market their
war by conspiring to commit a felony against a legitimate whistle blower.
The First Amendment is not an immunity blanket for criminals. You do the
crime – you do the time. Lock them both up and throw away the keys...

Dumping Bush's 'war-poodle': Blair brings the terror to London
Mike Whitney, The Smirking Chimp
...Blair is teetering from accusations that he made Britain less safe and
is responsible for the fresh wave of terrorist attacks on the homeland. No
media extravaganza will turn that around. Blair's linkage to Bush is an
albatross that grows heavier by the day. An aggressive movement to unseat
the reeling PM could have a profound affect in forcing Blair to finally
step down. Ridding England of Bush's "war-poodle" would! be the best thing
to come from this hideous action. One good shove and he'll crack like
glass. Then we can move on to George Bush...

US forces arrest Iraqi Sunni leader

Sunni Arab area around Samarra, north of Baghdad, Iraqi police say. Shaikh
Talal Abd al-Karim al-Matar, the head of the Samarra tribal council and
chief of the al-Sood, was taken away late on Monday night by US troops from
his home in al-Muatasim, east of Samarra, said Lieutenant Colonel Mahmud

Liars, Damn Liars and the Bush Administration
DOUG THOMPSON
Add yet another lie to the mountain of prevarications that define the
administration of President George W. Bush. For months, the “official”
White House line has been that Presidential advisor Karl Rove was “not
involved” in the leak of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame’s name to the
media. That lead compromised Plame, wife of former ambassador and
Presidential critic Joseph Wilson. We may never know the extent of damage
caused by the leaking of classif! ied information to the media. Now it
turns out Rove was not only “involved” but was, in fact, the primary source
for the leak to right-wing columnist Robert Novak, Time magazine reporter
Matt Cooper and God knows how many others...

Iraqis sell their blood to survive
IRIN
Iraqis are selling their own blood to people who are buying supplies for
relatives in need, due to a shortage, doctors say. This has caused concern
over the spread of disease since the supplies are not checked for
blood-bourne infections. Every day hundreds of donors can be seen standing
outside the blood bank at the Iraqi National Centre for Blood Donations
(INCBD) in the capital, Baghdad...

Voices of Resistance
An Interview with Dr. Mohammad al-Obaidi of Iraq's Peoples' Struggle Movement
LAITH al-SAUD, CounterPunch
The mainstream media's attenuation of information regarding Iraq has now
rendered public discourse about US policy in Iraq incoherent and
incomprehensible. In spite of rising death and tragedy in Iraq, Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld claims "progress". Instead of debating the
criminality of the US invasion and occupation of Iraq, the New York Times
and Washington Post are disc! ussing what Dick Cheney actually meant by
"last throes." And, of course, instead of finding a way to end the
destructive campaign that the Bush administration inflicts on the Iraqi
people, Americans are being asked for open-ended commitment to war.
Completely obliterated in all this is the suppression by the tmainstream
media of an entire side of the issue: the opposition...

Tariq Ali on politics and the bombs
Socialist Worker
...Iraq brings back memories of Vietnam on a number of levels. In Vietnam,
as in Iraq today, many politicians said, “It will soon be over, and we will
bring our troops home by Christmas.” Older members of the audience may
remember General Westmoreland, the US military commander in Vietnam. Every
year he used to say, “The boys will be back this Christmas.” Another of the
generals in Vietnam gave a statement contradicting the politicians and his
fellow officers, ! saying, “If they want us to control this situation we
could be here ten years.” At least he spoke the truth. Another similarity
is the wanton destruction of cities and human life. Over 100,000 civilians
have been killed in Iraq...

Out !!
Imad Khadduri, Free Iraq
"Radicals within Iraq's Shiite majority community launched a petition for
the withdrawal of US-led troops, which they said was drawing support from
across the sectarian divide. Supporters of firebrand cleric Moqtada Sadr,
who led a bloody six-month uprising against the coalition last year, said
they were aiming to secure one million signatures inside four days. "We
started this morning and so far we have had a good response, not only from
Shiites -- Sunnis and Christians have also ! been coming to our office to
show their support," said Ibrahim al-Jaberi, an official in Sadr's

Right-wing bombing in London?
Xymphora
" Some informed British sources believe that the recent London Transport
bombings may have been the work of far right-wing British terrorists hoping
to stir up tensions with the nation's large Muslim population. There are
several reasons for this belief. One is that GCHQ and MI-5 intercepts of
the communications of Muslim groups in Britain and abroad - groups
suspected of ties to militants - revealed that targeted individuals and
organizations were genuinely surprised at the! London bombings"...

residents of the Jubayl area in the south of al-Fallujah as saying that a

Team recounts fear in US detention
Contractors' tale reflects tensions with the military
Josh White and Griff Witte, Washington Post
The feelings of helplessness began to creep in right away. The orange
jumpsuit and flimsy sandals were too small, the silence eerie. Time passed
slowly. Before long, Darrell Cleland knew there were exactly 197 cinder
blocks in his tiny cell and 861 openings in the grate above his head.
Cleland, 28, used to escort prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as a platoon
serg! eant in the Marine Corps. But in May he was behind bars in Fallujah,
Iraq, his Marine Corps brothers became his guards, and Cleland suddenly
identified with his former captives...
