...Above the article was the photo at the top of this piece. When my friend
saw that, he was aghast. For the next 10 minutes he raved. "Do you
understand what that means?" he kept asking. "This will enrage any Iraqi,"
he added. I knew the crossed swords monument was built to commemorate the
veterans of the Iran-Iraq War, but I did not know of what else that area of
Baghdad represented. My friend said that it was a park that commemorated
peace and the bravery of Iraqi soldiers! as well as the unity of Iraq. He
equated this area to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris or the Washington
Monument in the U.S. Now I realized why he was so agitated (...)Even during
the Nazi occupation of France, the Germans never took away areas of French
pride. The Arc de Triomphe was not considered out of bounds. The U.S. has
entered into new territory in denying Iraqis yet another part of their
culture. This is another attempt to humiliate the Iraqis. The U.S. has
forbidden them to see one of their most treasured areas, yet they still
have not broken the Iraqi will or pride...

people have shown an incredible determination and ability to resist. This
truth contradicts liberal critics of the Bush administration who reason
that the United States isn't succeeding because the administration failed
to consult with allies and the UN, because of poor planning, or
insufficient troops, or Bush's l! imited intellect. U.S. imperialism has

As it turns out, Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr, who was reportedly abducted in
Milan on February 17, 2003, was a CIA informant, according to Albanian
intelligence officials. "Why would the U.S. government go to elaborate
lengths to seize a 39-year-old Egyptian who, according to former Albanian
intelligence officials, was once the CIA's most productive source of
information within the tightly knit group of Islamic fu! ndamentalists
living in exile in Albania?" muses the Chicago Tribune. Italian prosecutors
seem to believe Nasr had wandered and the CIA wanted to "turn him back into
the informer he once was." Maybe. However, there is also the possibility
the CIA (and there is evidence the abduction has nothing to do with the
CIA) wanted to make sure Nasr didn't spill the beans on their covert
activities. Italian prosecutors are discovering some interesting links as
they probe the Nasr abduction...

disputing assertions made in the mass media in general and the Times in
particular that Saddam is known to have "gassed his own people," committing
mass genocide. It has not mattered how much evidence I presented to you as
editors or reporters, or to the newspaper's ombudsman, the news dispatches
regarding the genocide issue continue to make the same unproven assertions.
In your Sunday edition, a front-pa! ge piece by your chief foreign
correspondent, John F. Burns, wrote under the headline, "Town That Bled
Under Hussein Hails His Trial." In one paragraph, John made several of the
key unsupported assertions that prompted me to write to him directly
yesterday, following with this memo to you today...

With the best of intentions

...In focusing attention on the G8 Summit on the 6th July, the event surely
was effective. However, it could be said that it worked strongly in the
favour of Tony Blair, who has been on the ropes for some time for blatantly
lying to the British people about going to war in Iraq and for his
unequivocal support for his US counterpart, a person whom most in the UK,
and around the world, hold only antipathy towards. Pundits, commentators
and artists all missed ! a global opportunity to refocus public attention
on the wider picture. Suddenly the Middle East is forgotten while the
public is whipped up into a frenzy over getting eight men to simply do
their job. Did not 2 million people vociferously protest against an illegal
war just two years ago in the very same park? Yet not one person uttered
the word "Iraq" or "war"...

Egyptian Diplomat Kidnap Warning to Arabs: Experts

The abduction of the head of the Egyptian diplomatic mission in Baghdad
sends a strong message from Iraqi resistance groups to Arab countries set
to follow the Egyptian lead by sending ambassadors to occupied Iraq,
Egyptian experts have said (...)But former Egyptian ambassador to
Afghanistan Ahmad El-Ghamrawi offered a different version of the abduction.
"Iraq has become an open arena for intelligence services and there is a
strong po! ssibility that Sherif was kidnapped by a foreign body to pit the
Egyptians and the Iraqis against one another," he told IOL. He said
Sherif's latest post as Egyptian charges d'affaires in Tel Aviv
substantiate the theory that he might have been abducted by the Israeli
intelligence services Mossad...

unreported in relation to the rea looting of Iraq. This looting was not the
looting of buildings in Baghdad carried out by mobs in April 2003, which
received widespread media coverage. It was the major industrial-scale
looting and stealing of Iraq's resources, raw materials and technolo! gy
carried out throughout 2003 and 2004 by international corporations and
other entities. It went apparently either unnoticed or unreported by the
media and was at least partly carried out as an official policy of the

Promoting "the rule of law" in thatenvironment

member of the 270+ member of the four months-old elected 'National
Assembly' $50,000 to buy a car plus $5,000 monthly salary, plus $10,000
travel expenses when they travel abroad. Furthermore, these salaries are to
be extended in perpetuity as 'retirement' pensions when the Assembly is
finally dissolved in December 2005 after the ratification of the 'Iraqi
Cons! titution'. Furthermore, if any memeber of the 'Assembly' is holding
any other government position, they are still entitled to these 'benefits'
in addition to their other salary." (...) That is about $14,000,000 just
for the Assembly members' cars, notwithstanding that Iraqi laws allow
retirement from civil service only after 15-25 years, and not 8 months; and
bearing in mind that the average civil servant salary is about $300 a month
and the unemployment rate is about 60% in Iraq...

American troops' optimism diminishes

Operating Base Danger in Tikrit, Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Taluto contemplates
the war American soldiers under his command are now waging. "The enemy is
intrinsic," said Taluto, who heads the 42nd Infantry Division and the Army
units attached to it in Iraq. "They're infiltrating the Iraqi security
forces as we speak. I don't know how big (the insurgency) is, but I think

Will Ben Stein Come Clean about the Iraqi War?

I found Neocon Ben Stein's last column for Morton's very moving. In fact, I
was so moved by his piece, entitled, "How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane
Luxury be a 'Star' in Today World?" that I wanted to throw up! I
particularly found his statement that U.S. soldiers, who are fighting and
dying in Iraq are "the real stars" of our society, as being grossly
insincere. If Stein considered the troops to be "real stars," then why did
he and others, put ! them in harm's way and support the Iraqi War, which
was based on a pack of lies concocted by the Bush-Cheney Gang? Like the
Bush-Cheney Gang, he used our troop for his own political ends. Now, he is
praising the troops to cover his own a..! Stein has also claimed that the
inmate abuse at Abu Ghraib prison, in Iraq, only amounted to "frat-boy
mistreatment!" Shame on him!...

A Lot of Talk While Veterans Continue to be Left Behind

Every veteran's organization in the country has been disseminating
information for the past 4 years about the V.A. being under funded
(actually more than that, but since BushCo it has gotten substantially
worse). Since the megalomaniacal "Mayberry Machiavellis" in the White House
and Congress kicked off their little "war of aggression" in Iraq, the V.A.
has been overwhelmed with new veterans back from Iraq wi! th myriad
physical, mental and emotional problems—over 103,000 so far. However, the
BushCo cabal has not seen fit to even remotely come close to the proper
funding of the V.A., and the veterans from this latest war of deception in
Iraq are now joining with the rest of us from wars gone by in the fight for
veterans' fair and just treatment. Or should I just say treatment—as that
is what is lacking across the board...

QUESTIONER: The second one was a fellow who was a close adviser on the
nuclear side, who went on to Canada--actually escaped from Saddam, went off
to Canada and while--and he was very quiet for a long time because he was
scared, but then as he saw war coming he actually went public and said, you
know, "I was very close to the nuclear side and nothing was going on there.
This was over for years." (...) I'm told that the fellow in Canada
didn't--I! 'm sorry, his name escapes me--was never even interviewed by the
CIA. DUELFER (...) And the second fellow, whose name is Imad Khadduri, he
was involved in the nuclear program but more as a--he collected
documentation. And yes, he went to Canada. I mean, there were a lot of
Iraqis who left Iraq who had more or less something to say. The fact that
he said that the nuclear program had ended--you know, I don't how you would
agree to that, but it does point to one of, I think, the systemic problems
in the intelligence committee, which they are now thinking about: How do
you account for negative information? The system--you know, if you have a
100 people in the day who say, you know, "I was driving in Baghdad and I
didn't see anything," it doesn't make it to the president's desk. It's just
a--it's unnatural. I mean that, you know, nothing is happening, so you are
going to report that to the president? ...

Still Not Worth It

...I heard George and the Senators say that evening the sacrifices we as
Americans have had to make for Iraq are "worth it." I really would like to
know who has benefited and profited from Iraq and who has really had to
sacrifice anything. I know it was "worth it" to Dick Cheney who was the CEO
of Halliburton, (of no-bid contract fame) which has raped billions of
dollars from our government, from the people of Iraq, and from our soldiers
who are not getting what they need to survi! ve in a combat zone. It is
"worth it" to Black Water Security Co. who sends one-thousand-dollar-a-day
mercenaries to Iraq, funded by the War Department. It is "worth it" to L.
Paul Bremer who slunk out of Iraq with 8.8 BILLION dollars missing from the
Provisional authority...

"69 For You"

...I was stunned during my visit to IRAQ to see three teenage girls
(including a relative) wearing a white T-Shirt with the words, "69 For You"
written on it without them knowing what it signifies. This is happening in
a society where girls are expected to be virgins before marriage (...)
Since these T-shirts were not made in IRAQ, why have they been imported for
Iraqis to wear? (...) Speaking of rape, what would be worse than wearing a
"69 For You" T-Shirt in an occupied country ! by English speaking militants
who know the meaning of this phrase? Encouraging the rape perhaps? It is
shocking the number of Iraqi women and young girls who have been raped
since April 2003...

assassinated in a perfectly executed gangland-style hit a few miles outside
of Baghdad. He was struck by a single bullet to the head by an American

torture and murder of "suspected insurgents" by US-backed death-squads...
