Smoking Bullet in the Smoking Gun?
Congressman John Conyers, Daily Kos
...These are revelations of not only systematic efforts to bring a war
against Iraq in most of 2002, it appears to be evidence that war was BEING
CONDUCTED against Iraq in 2002. Representative Conyers provides us some new
information on the question he has presented to Secretaryof Defense
Rumsfled and an action item. This morning I read the new revelations, again
the London Times, that British and U.S. aircraft had substantially stepped
up the! ir bombing activity in the summer of 2002 in an effort to "goad
Saddam into War." If true, we would seem to have the "smoking bullet" to
the "smoking gun" of the Downing Street Memo...

A Vietnam-War-Style Anti-War Movement Needed to Awaken Americans
Bill Henderson
...How is it possible that the fifth estate of the world's greatest
democracy can't comprehend that Iraq is the crime of the century? That
Bush's contempt of truth, democracy and the rule of law is THE huge story,
so much bigger than Watergate, than Iran-Contragate? That we are living in
the equivalent of Germany in the '30s; and that dimly most Americans even
realize that government has been captured and that America is the
aggressor! in Iraq and pushing in Asia towards possible nuclear war ?...

Tariq Aziz denies offering Chirac oil vouchers as bribes before invasion
Anne Penketh, Independent
The right-hand man of Saddam Hussein, the former deputy prime minister
Tariq Aziz, has denied that the Iraqi leadership bribed the President of
France and the former leader of Indonesia with oil vouchers to secure
political support before the invasion of Iraq (...) Senators from the
Permanent Sub-committee on Investigations interviewed Mr Aziz in Camp
Cropper last month, and he had previously been questioned by the ! US-led
Iraq Survey Group. Mr Aziz said in one of the notes: "I was asked if I had
recommended giving money or oil to President Chirac [of France], or Petros
Gali [the former UN secretary general Boutros Boutros-Ghali], Ekius [Rolf
Ekeus, the former chief UN weapons inspector]. My answer is NO. The same to
President Megawati [of Indonesia]. NO"...

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi: Suckering the Great Unwashed
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
Now we’re expected to believe Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is in Iran. “Quoting a
senior insurgency commander in Iraq, the Sunday Times said Zarqawi had
shrapnel lodged in his chest and may have been moved to Iran. It said his
supporters might try to move the Jordanian-born militant to another country
for an operation,” reports Reuters. Is it possible this “senior insurgency
commander” is an idiot or possibly a rank amateur?...

Do The People Of Iraq Have A Right To Resist U.S. Occupation?
Jack Smith
...The nature of the fight back itself has been grossly distorted by the
mass media at the behest of the White House. It is important in this regard
to recognize three things: 1. The resistance is composed of political as
well as armed elements. 2. The masses of Iraqis oppose the occupation and
want U.S. troops to get out. 3. The resistance enjoys support from the
people of Iraq, despite U.S. efforts to neutralize various constituencies
thro! ugh pressure, manipulation, grandiose promises, threats and bribery.
How else could an armed urban guerrilla force function in heavily occupied
territory without the support of the people?...

A REVOLUTIONARY ACT
Malcom Lagauche
The Iraqi resistance is getting a lot of publicity lately in the press.
It’s about time. For months, the mainstream press ignored it and had no
clue it was even occurring. Today’s reports, for the most part, are quite
feeble. They are about a year out of date and reflect little of the reality
of the resistance. However, on May 15, 2005, the Boston Globe ran a piece
titled "Iraq’s Ba’athists Rebound on 2 Fronts," that gave a much more
accurate look at the resistance from ! that of other major media. I am
puzzled because no other mainstream U.S. media, and much of the progressive
media, have failed to address the feature story...

Oil-for-Food scandal?
Galloway opens door to expose U.S. crimes
Tony Murphy, Workers World
...The 2001 declassification of 1991 Defense Intelligence Agency documents
showed that the Pentagon’s conscious goal was to cause widespread illness
throughout the Iraqi population, through water-borne disease. “Conditions
are favorable for communicable disease outbreaks, particularly in major
urban areas affected by coalition bombing,” is a chillingly typical quote.
This genocidal campaign, waged to get control! of Iraq’s oil resources, is
the true crime behind the oil-for-food “scandal” now making headlines...

Feith and Franklin
Xymphora
...So the story is now that Douglas Feith decided that the best way to get
information to his colleague and fellow ultra-Zionist Elliott Abrams was to
have it delivered through Franklin to AIPAC and then to Abrams? Very
strange. Note that the story that Franklin was trying to pass on
information concerning threats to Israeli agents in Kurdistan is now that
he was trying to pass on information concerning threats from Iranians to
Americans in Iraq. The idea that Franklin was trying to pr! otect Americans
from Iranians simultaneously makes Franklin more sympathetic and focuses
the blame on Iran (which is of course on the current Zionist hit list), but
has the disadvantage of making no sense...

Shia Leaders...
Riverbend, Baghdad Burning
...In 1958, after the July 14 Revolution which ended the Iraqi monarchy,
the head of the Iraqi Sovereignty Council (which was equivalent to the
position of president) was Mohammed Najib Al-Rubayi- a Shia from Kut (...)
Even during the last regime, there were two Shia prime ministers filling
the position for several years- Sadoun Humadi and Mohammed Al-Zubaidi. In
other words, Sunni Arabs are not horrified at having a Shia leader (though
we are very worried about the curr! ent Puppets' pro-Iran tendencies).
Friedman seems to conveniently forget that while the New Iraq's president
was a polygamous Arab Sunni- Ghazi Al-Yawir- the attacks were just as
violent. Were it simply a matter of Sunnis vs. Shia or Arabs vs. Kurds,
then Sunni Arabs would have turned out in droves to elect "Al Baqara al
dhahika" ("the cow that laughs" or La Vache Qui Rit- it's an Iraqi joke) as
Al-Yawir is known amongst Iraqis...

Long Jailings Anger Iraqis
Doug Smith and Raheem Salman, Los Angeles Times
A year after the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal erupted, Iraqi anger has flared
anew over the growing numbers of detainees held without charge at the
notorious detention center and another prison in the south. In the battle
against the insurgency, U.S. military sweeps net many guerrillas, but also
thousands of people whose offenses are nonexistent, minor or impossible to
prove. They are often held for months, only to be released without
explanat! ion...

The old lie: Dulce et decorum est - Pro patria mori *
Kristina M. Gronquist
As Memorial Day approaches, much of the media will roll over backwards to
glorify war and all the soldiers slaughtered in wars. Tributes to the dead
are easy; the dead don't talk back. The media will prove their nationalism
and allegiance by feeding us war stories ad nausea. Civilian casualties
will not be mentioned, nor will- post traumatic stress syndrome, Agent
Orange, or Gulf War syndrome. The deleterious health effects of depleted
ur! anium (used in today’s weapons) will likewise be ignored. This is no
time for truth, mind you, this is the hour to exalt and wallow in the most
evil system man has created – the system of war...

INSURGENTS DEFY IRAQ CRACKDOWN
World News
Dozens of people have been killed in a wave of insurgent attacks across
Iraq, despite the largest security crackdown since the collapse of Saddam
Hussein’s regime (...) But insurgents wasted no time defying the offensive,
launching a series of coordinated attacks on Sunday. Four car bombs in and
around the capital killed 16 people, most of them security personnel. Nine
soldiers taking part in Operation Lightning died when a suicide car bomb
exploded at their roadblock j! ust south of the capital (...) An earlier
suicide bombing near the oil ministry left two dead, while violence
elsewhere claimed the lives of a British soldier and seven Iraqis.

RAF bombing raids tried to goad Saddam into war
Michael Smith, The Sunday Times
THE RAF and US aircraft doubled the rate at which they were dropping bombs
on Iraq in 2002 in an attempt to provoke Saddam Hussein into giving the
allies an excuse for war, new evidence has shown. The attacks were
intensified from May, six months before the United Nations resolution that
Tony Blair and Lord Goldsmith, the attorney-general, argued gave the
coalition the legal basis for war. By the end of August the raids had
become a f! ull air offensive. The details follow the leak to The Sunday
Times of minutes of a key meeting in July 2002 at which Blair and his war
cabinet discussed how to make “regime change” in Iraq legal...

From Cakewalk to Bloodbath
Bush Opts for Civil War in Iraq
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS, CounterPunch
...Moreover, the planned Baghdad Offensive is itself the beginning of a
civil war. The 50,000 troops represent a Shi'ite government. These troops
will be hunting Sunnis. There is no better way to start a civil war.As
George W. Bush has made clear many times, he is incapable of admitting a
mistake. The inability to admit a mistake makes rational behavior
impossible. In place of thought, the Bush administration re! lies on
coercion and violence. Nevertheless, Congress does not have to be a doormat
for a war criminal. It can put a halt to Bush's madness...

Samir Haddad, IOL Correspondent
The new “Operation Lightning” security crackdown on Baghdad and its suburbs
will backfire on security troops and lay to rest bids to calm down
tensions, Iraqi Sunni leaders warned said on Sunday, May 29. “If the Iraqi
security troops moved ahead with this new operation, resistance factions
would find themselves on the defensive,” Islamic Party’s senior leader Iyad
Al-Ezzawi was quoted as saying by the London-based Al-Hayat daily...

Paper releases Aziz jail letters
BBC News
A British newspaper has published letters which it says were written by
former Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz in prison. In the letters
released by the Observer and addressed to "world public opinion", he pleads
for international help to end "his dire situation" (...) "It is imperative
that there is intervention into our dire situation and treatment," he
writes in one of the letters, which the Observer says was written on 21
April. "It is totally in contradicti! on to international law, the Geneva
Convention and Iraqi law as we know it"...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Saturday, 28 May 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice. ( http://www.freearabvoice.org )
...QudsPress reported Dr Walid al-Hadithi, the Director of Hadithah General
Hospital as saying that US occupation troops raided his hospital. The
Americans began, Dr. al-Hadithi said, by firing noise grenades at the
facility that terrified the medical workers and the patients in the
hospital. Then the Americans stormed in and ! began a large-scale search of
the hospital. The Doctor said that the reasons for the massive American
raid on the hospital and for the terrorization of patients and staff was
still unknown. Meanwhile, sources in various locations inside al-Hadithah
told QudsPress that Resistance fighters were continuing their attacks on
the American invaders from outside the city...

government were most likely meant for a nuclear weapons program rather than
for rockets -- have received job performance awards in each of the past
three years, officials said...

An Iraqi View:
Abu Ghraib, Abu Gulag and Abu American Lies
Ghazwan Al-Mukhtar
...Under the American control Abu Ghraib was transformed from a prison to a
“detention and interrogation” center. American forces lacking the language
skill, the cultural understanding and sheer volume of detainees were
frustrated by the lack of progress in getting the intelligence information
they needed. This frustration led to the “migration” of interrogation
methods developed in Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay. This was t! he
beginning of the Abu Gulag prison. It is at that time that the father of
the worst prisons was created in Iraq by the American forces. Saddam’s Abu
Ghraib was a jail of convicted criminals – at least there was an appearance
that they were convicted in Saddam’s courts. The American Abu Gulag was a
place where people were detained with no judicial orders and detainees were
tortured to speedily extract information from them...
