"Irachizzare" il pantano
Tom Engelhardt, Osservatorio Iraq
americane'. E nelle loro battaglie, dice, i mujahidin vincono sempre"...

More Casualties, More Troops
Lie Then Escalate
DAVE LINDORFF, CounterPunch
With the election out of the way, the Bush administration is now free to
proceed with what it knew would have to happen-an escalation of the war in
Iraq, and an increase in the number of U.S. troops facing death and injury.
During the campaign, Bush was dismissive of calls for more troops in Iraq,
which his opponent John Kerry insisted would be necessary to "get the job
done." Bush repeatedly countered that there would be no need! to add more
troops, and claimed that the training of Iraqi soldiers meant that in fact
troop levels could start to be reduced. Now we see that it was all a
campaign trick...

An enemy of the state
George Galloway, The Guardian
...The Telegraph did me and the anti-war movement an injustice and the
judge held it to account. But the Blair government - which used the
Telegraph's assault to force me out of a Labour party I'd served for 36
years - has committed an incomparably greater injustice. Iraq was invaded
on trumped-up charges. As a result, an estimated 100,000 Iraqis have died;
the lives of millions more have been wrecked. This week we learned the
conditions of child health in a lan! d occupied are now even worse than
during the killing years of sanctions. Yet not a single government minister
has fallen. No official has been sacked. Alastair Campbell has become a
highly paid raconteur and talk show host. John Scarlett, unblushing, has
been promoted to head the Secret Intelligence Service. The guilty men in
Whitehall and Westminster remain unpunished. Now the stain on my name has
been removed, I intend to step up my efforts, with others both inside and
outside parliament, to harry and hold to account those responsible for the
crimes of the Iraq war...

US Troops Fire on Ambulance
IslamOnline.net
...Meanwhile, US forces opened fire on an ambulance vehicle in Fallujah,
wounding Dr Rafi Al-Isawi, director of Fallujah Hospital along with two of
his colleagues traveling in. Isawi and his colleagues were in Fallujah
after they were given the green light from the interim Iraqi health
ministry and US troops to rehabilitate health centers in the city,

The EU, US, Israel and Iran
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly and the "Mullahs"
SASAN FAYAZMANESH, CounterPunch
...As I have shown in CounterPunch and elsewhere, Israel, its lobby groups,
its Congressmen, its friends in the Administration-both the cons and the
neocons-as well as its Chalabi-like mercenaries, who are in the business of
fabricating lies, have been trying for sometime to repeat in Iran what they
did in Iraq. That is, by accusing Iran of developing nuclear weapons, they
have attempted to get the ! UN to pass economic sanctions against Iran.
Once the sanctions are imposed, Israel and its cohorts believe, Iran will
be weakened sufficiently to make a military operation against it succeed.
That would destroy yet another supporter of the Palestinians and would make
Israel's rule over the entire land between "the river of Egypt to the great
river, the Euphrates" possible...

After Fallujah's destruction: US occupation force to reach 150,000
Joseph Kay, WSWS
...While the Pentagon is presenting the increase in troop strength as
merely a step to ensure "security" in the run-up to the elections scheduled
for the end of January, its real significance lies elsewhere. With the
assault on Fallujah, the US military initiated a major offensive designed
to crush the Iraqi resistance through the use of overwhelming force. The
resulting death and destruction has only intensified opposition within! the
Iraqi population, requiring the introduction of more troops. The pattern is
similar to the early days of Vietnam: opposition leads to more troops;
escalation then leads to more opposition...

Jail the War Party. For treason
Justin Raimondo, Antwar
...Who gained from this war - aside from Osama bin Laden, that is? It's a
valid enough question to ask in trying to determine how policy was formed,
and how we came to fall into the Iraqi quagmire. But it's less than half
the story: and that's the significance of the AIPAC spy scandal. For the
first time, we have solid evidence that the Israeli government has actively
sought, with some success, to penetrate the policymaking apparatus that
steers the U.S. shi! p of state. The neocons have often been accused -
including in this space - of hijacking American policy in the Middle East
and utilizing U.S. military power to Israel's advantage. Now we are
beginning to get the full picture of exactly how - with the full knowledge
and active collaboration of the Israeli government - this was done...

Police in Baghdad target of twin attacks
Aljazeera.net
At least 26 people, including many policemen, have been killed in two
separate attacks north and west of the Iraqi capital. Twelve Iraqi
policemen were killed and 10 others wounded on Friday in an attack launched
by an unknown group of fighters on al-Amil police station, near the airport
road in western Baghdad. According to Iraqi police sources, the attackers
freed all prisoners detained at the police station and set ablaze three
police vehicles...

Rebels return to 'cleared' areas
Scott Peterson | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
...But the original problem persists: US forces sweep through one
neighborhood after another, only to find insurgents popping up in "cleared"
areas. The battle Monday killed one marine and wounded three others - a
high cost against three insurgents, who had moved into a house 50 feet
across the street from a newly established marine position at a Fallujah
fire station. That house and several others nearby had been clea! red just
two days earlier...

The Quiet of Destruction and Death
Dahr Jamail, Electronic Iraq
...This past Sunday a small Iraqi Red Crescent aid convoy was allowed into
Fallujah at 4:30pm. I interviewed a member of the convoy today. Speaking on
condition of anonymity, (so I'll call her Suthir), the first thing she said
to me was, "I need another heart and eyes to bear it because my own are not
enough to bear what I saw. Nothing justifies what was done to this city. I
didn't see a house or mosque that wasn't destroyed"...

Gunning for Satan resulted in slaughtered innocents
Robert C. Koehler Tribune Media Services
"The enemy has got a face," a Marine lieutenant-colonel told an embedded
reporter just before the invasion began. "He's called Satan. He lives in
Fallujah. And we're going to destroy him." And with that fair warning,
10,000 or so heavily armed avenging angels descended on a latter-day Sodom
and reduced it to rubble. It was jihad with a yahoo, "a return to the
simplicity of combat," wrote Paul Wood of the BBC, "after the !
complexities of peacekeeping and an enemy that never shows itself." Who
knew there was such a fine line between democracy and genocide?...

Letter from a GI in Falluja:
"This wasn't a war, it was a massacre"
Socialist Worker
...Did the Department of Defense and the national press lie to the public
and claim another preemptive victory? Not necessarily so. Conventionally,
we won the battle--how could anyone argue that? We destroyed an entire city
and killed thousands of its occupants. But the main issue that both the
military and public forget to analyze is that this war, beyond any shadow
of a doubt, is completely guerrilla. Sometimes I wo! nder if the West
Point-graduated officers have ever studied the intricate simplicity and
effectiveness of guerrilla warfare...

Fallujah refugees in desperate need of aid: UN

More than 200,000 people who fled Fallujah ahead of the US offensive have
yet to return and many are in desperate need of aid, with temperatures in
Iraq heading towards freezing, a new UN emergency report says. Figures
compiled by the International Organisation for Migration show that 210,600
people, or more than 35,000 families, have taken refuge in towns and
villages around Fallujah...

Fallujah, 'mission not accomplished'
Seth Meixner, Middle East Online
US Marines keeping a tenuous peace in the battered Iraqi city of Fallujah
say they expect an explosion of violence as rebels hiding among returning
refugees renew their deadly campaign of bombings and ambushes. They also
fear the insurgency will find increasing support from Fallujah residents
who return to find their homes and businesses devastated by last month's
massive US-led assault on the Sunni Muslim enclave...

Insurgency broken? Far from it
JOSEPH L. GALLOWAY, Knight Ridder Newspapers
A senior American commander made the mistake of telling reporters that the
military offensive that eventually captured a largely depopulated and
destroyed Fallujah had "broken the back of the insurgency" across Iraq. It
did not, of course. It could not...

U.S. Marines Change Policy on Disclosing Iraq Deaths
Will Dunham, Reuters
The U.S. Marine Corps said on Thursday it will again disclose the deaths of
Marines as they occur in Iraq, reversing a policy that has made it
difficult to track American casualties and the lethality of the insurgency.
The Marines, ahead of the Falluja offensive that began Nov. 8, instituted a
policy of no longer announcing the deaths of Marines shortly after fatal
attacks by insurgents took place. "We changed our policy in mid-October,
dec! iding not to issue press releases on a casualty because we did not
want to aid the enemy in determining the success of their actions," Col.
Jenny Holbert, a spokeswoman with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in
Iraq, said by e-mail...

Iraq: The U.S. Wrong All the Way
Sam Hamod
...First, what would you do if someone invaded your country and decided to
take it over? Wouldn't you fight back? Of course you would. For those of
who still have some common sense and are not hypnotized by the lies of the
media--we are aware that anyone would defend his or her country. So why is
it so hard for Americans to realize that what are called "insurgents" and
"terrorists" are actually Iraqis defending their families, their homes and
their country against outsid! e invaders. Thus, to the Iraqis and to most
of the world, at least 85% according to recent world wide surveys, our
American troops are seen as the "terrorists" who do not belong in Iraq and
it is our troops who are committing the atrocities with the illegal use of
the outlawed napalm, poison gas and phosphorous shells...
