Sy Hersh's News: He's Describing Massacre In Iraq
Tom Scocca with Joe Hagan
...So orders came down from the generals in Baghdad: We want to clear the
village, like in Samarra. And, as [the soldier] told the story, another
platoon from his company came and executed all the guards, as his people
were screaming, "Stop!" And he said they just shot them one by one. He went
nuts, and his soldiers went nuts …. And the company captain said, "No, you
don't understand. That's a kill. We got 36 insurgents...

The Iraqi Resistance Chooses Bush
Amer Jubran, Axis of Logic
...Bush has caused major problems for the US political, corporate, and
media institutions which must somehow explain the scenes of dead American
soldiers on the streets of Iraq. In Iraq, there is a chance to undo the
myth of the undefeated American empire. This will come as the result of a
combination of a stupid Bush and an ever- growing, confident Iraqi
resistance. The future of a country is decided by its people. The road to
victory is paved with the blood of both sides fighting, which means
American blood as well. If Fallujah and the Iraqi resistance were to cast
their ballot in the US elections, they would certainly vote for Bush. They
are not in fear of Bush, they are waiting for him.

The WMD-lite Scandal
Pepe Escobar, Asia Times - World Crisis Web
...So this is the crucial point in the whole affair: the Pentagon - as well
as the IAEA - knew the 380 tons were stored at al-Qaqaa, but US troops
didn't make any move to search for them or secure them, because this was
not a priority at the time. This week White House spokesman Scott McClellan
all but admitted that securing Iraq's oil fields and the Ministry of Oil
was a much higher priority than securing 345,000kg (760,000 pounds) of the
most power ful non-nuclear explosives around (less than one pound blew up
Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland). In itself, this admission
blows up the Bush administration's whole case for invading Iraq, weapons of
mass destruction (WMD)...

Why the U.S. must withdraw from Iraq
Peter Dale Scott
In 1991, after the Gulf War, President George H.W. Bush proclaimed, "The
specter of Vietnam has been buried forever in the desert sands of the
Arabian Peninsula." But the specter he and the Pentagon had feared for over
a decade, of a devastating shrinkage of U.S. influence following a military
withdrawal, had always been a phantom. That "specter," of defeat in
Vietnam, proved in time to be as harmless as a Halloween ghost...

This is your last chance, Fallujah rebels are told as US prepares ground attack
Toby Harnden
Iraq's government yesterday offered the leaders of rebel-held Fallujah a
"last" chance to negotiate as an American military commander described the
city as a cancer that had to be dealt with. Iyad Allawi, the Iraqi prime
minister, indicated that time was fast running out for those who were
harbouring insurgents there. "This chance could be the last," he said in a
statement, imploring "the leaders and notables of Fallujah t o use it to
find a political solution"...

FBI Glossed Over Abu Ghraib Abuses in Recently Obtained Report
Lisa Ashkenaz Croke, The NewStandard
An FBI memorandum released October 15 demonstrates a lack of consistency
regarding agents' knowledge of permitted interrogation techniques used at
Abu Ghraib prison. Several Bureau special agents and translators told
inspectors during an internal inquiry in May that, while visiting the
infamous facility between October and December 2003, they saw detainees
hooded or naked and learned of allegations of other mistreat ment...

Al-Qaqaa: 'Benign' Neglect by a Malign Power
William Bowles
...In every important respect, the way the events of al-Qaqaa have been
'reported' by the corporate and state media represents an approach that
downplays causes and history, leaving the reader or the viewer with a
disjointed and decontextualized version of events, whereby catastrophes are
not made, they merely 'happen' through individual actions or 'blunders'.
Any suggestion that such things might actually be policy are completely
ignored for do so would call into the question the legitimacy not only of
our governments' actions but their right to act in the way they do...

Baath Party fliers urge Saddam's return
Reuters
Leaflets distributed by Iraq's toppled Baath Party urge Iraqis to boycott
next year's elections and step up an insurgency against US-led forces to
pave the way for Saddam Hussein's return. The leaflets say Iraq's interim
Government is made up of "sectarian and racist parties" appointed by the
United States to prolong its troop presence in Iraq indefinitely...

Will there be a war against the world after November 2?
John Pilger
...The New York Times, the country's liberal standard-bearer, having
recovered from a mild bout of contrition over its abject failure to
challenge Bush's lies about Iraq, has been running tombstones of column
inches about what-went-wrong in the 'liberation' of that country. It blames
mistakes: tactical oversights, faulty intelligence. Not a word suggests
that the invasion was a colonial conquest, deliberate like any other, and
that 60 years of int ernational law make it 'the paramount war crime', to
quote the Nuremberg judges. Not a word suggests that the American onslaught
on the population of Iraq was and is systematically atrocious, of which the
torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib was merely a glimpse...

Exclusive: Bush Wanted To Invade Iraq If Elected in 2000
By Russ Baker
Two years before the September 11 attacks, presidential candidate George W.
Bush was already talking privately about the political benefits of
attacking Iraq, according to his former ghost writer, who held many
conversations with then-Texas Governor Bush in preparation for a planned
autobiography. "He was thinking about invading Iraq in 1999," said author
and journalist Mickey Herskowitz. "It was on his mind"...

Behind Fallujah strategy
Scott Peterson | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
..."The logic is: You flatten Fallujah, hold up the head of Fallujah, and
say 'Do our bidding, or you're next,' " says Toby Dodge, an Iraq analyst at
the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London. "The reason for
such [threats] is because there are not enough troops, which creates a
security vacuum, which fuels the insurgency"...

Stop The Escalation
Jean Bricmont
Far from being over, the war in Iraq has only begun. The United States do
not seem to be able to defeat the Iraqi resistance with the means they have
been using. But neither can they accept their setbacks. The very arrogance
with which the war was declared and waged has put all their prestige at
stake in Iraq and, thereby, decades of efforts to assure their world
domination. The stakes are even greater than in the Vietnam war...

Centomila iracheni morti in guerra: «The Lancet» denuncia la strage
ribasso.
18 mesi successivi, passando in rassegna 988 famiglie in 33 zone campione.
coalizione...

Scientists Estimate 100,000 Iraqi Deaths
EMMA ROSS, AP Medical Writer
A survey of deaths in Iraqi households estimates that as many as 100,000
more people may have died throughout the country in the 18 months after the
U.S. invasion than would be expected based on the death rate before the war
(...) The survey indicated violence accounted for most of the extra deaths
seen since the invasion, and air strikes from coalition forces caused most
of the violent deaths, the researchers wrote in the British-based journal.
"Most individuals reportedly killed by coalition forces were women and
children," they said...

Provincial Capital Near Falluja Is Rapidly Slipping Into Chaos
EDWARD WONG, NYTimes
The American military and the interim Iraqi government are quickly losing
control of this provincial capital, which is larger and strategically more
important than its sister city of Falluja, say local officials, clerics,
tribal sheiks and officers with the United States Marines. "The city is
chaotic," said Sheik Ali al-Dulaimi, a leader of the region's largest
tribe. "There's no presence of the Allawi government," he added, speaki ng
of Prime Minister Ayad Allawi...

Americans prepare for the 'final assault' on rebel stronghold
Kim Sengupta, The Independent
For the American military, Fallujah is "the last battle", an overwhelming
assault that will destroy the epicentre of the rebellion sweeping through
the country, the beginning of the end of major American military action in
Iraq. For the insurgents, Fallujah is a rallying cry. An American attack
will, they declare, lead to retribution throughout Iraq, re-invigorating
the resistance, just as an attack on the city did six mont hs earlier (...)
The question now is not if but when there will be an attack on Fallujah...

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS
A 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS crew in Iraq shortly after the fall of Saddam Hussein
was in the area where tons of explosives disappeared, and may have
videotaped some of those weapons. The missing explosives are now an issue
in the presidential debate. Democratic candidate John Kerry is accusing
President Bush of not securing the site they allegedly disappeared from.
President Bush says no one knows if the ammunition was taken before or af

Seymour Hersh: Man On Fire
Lakshmi Chaudhry, AlterNet
...Abu Ghraib is a symptom, a terrible symptom of a system that went bad
from the beginning. From the first days of the war, the attitude was 'We
can do anything we want.' When John Walker Lindh - that young boy who was
captured with al Qaeda, that lost kid from California - was first captured,
the mistreatment was astonishing. He was stripped, thrown around. There was
a bullet they didn't take out for days. The soldiers spit on him. There
were people at the ti me who thought it was just madness what we were doing
and that it would stop soon. But the American public liked it...

US bombing kills Fallujans
Aljazeera.net
US warplanes have bombed the Iraqi city of Falluja, killing three people
and flattening several homes in the eastern Julan district. Thursday's dawn
raid was described as the latest in a series of "precision" attacks on Abu
Musab al-Zarqawi and his alleged network. A US military statement said
"credible intelligence sources" reported that those killed had been
planning attacks on innocent civilians and Iraqi security forces. But the
press release did not name those who were killed in the "precision" bombing.

L'Iraq nel DNA dell'imperialismo
Luciana Bohne, Lega Antimperialista
