Bush keeps setting (bad) records
Molly Ivins
ANOTHER RECORD. We have already lost more American soldiers (488) in Iraq
in 239 days of this year than we did in 287 days last year (482), when
there was a war on and before our mission was accomplished. The grind of
the numbers is so relentless. Price of oil — pressing $50 a barrel. Poverty
rate — increased again, third year in a row. Number of Americans without
insurance — increased again, third year. Part of the "vibrant economy" Bush
touts daily now. And the news from Iraq just keeps get! ting worse and
worse...

Iraq oil export line attacked
Khaled Yacoub Oweis, Reuters
Iraq's northern oil export pipeline to Turkey has been bombed by saboteurs,
dashing government hopes that heightened security along the line may have
eased the threat o! f attacks. A huge blaze on the pipeline which runs from
the Kirkuk oilfields, southeast to the Baiji refinery, and then northwest
to Turkey is expected to take two days to extinguish, a fire officer at the
scene said on Thursday...

Depleted Uranium
Dennis Kyne
...Two months later the Seattle Post Intelligencer stated, "The Pentagon
and the United Nations estimate that the U.S. and Britain used 1,100 to
2,200 tons of armor piercing shells made of depleted ! uranium during
attacks on Iraq in March and April [2003] - far more than the 375 tons used
in the 1991 Gulf War." On February 2 of this year, Sara Flounders and John
Catalinotto of Swan's Commentary explained to America, "By now half of all
the 697,000 U.S. soldiers involved in the 1991 war have reported serious
illnesses. According to the American Gulf War Veterans Association, more
than 30 percent of these soldiers are chronically ill and are receiving
disability benefits from the Veterans Administration." So, if they have
used far more DU than was used in 1991, we should expect far more
disabilities, death and chronic pain. That is the truth...

American intentions all too clear to Iraqis
Jim Mullins
...the 400,000-man army and other police systems were disbanded;
professionals and technocrats with Baath Party membership — a condition of
employment — were fired; and th! e newly privatized economy was given over
to foreign investment under wide-open conditions that Iraqi entrepreneurs
were powerless to combat. The result: massive unemployment and an
exponential upsurge in crime and insurgency, funded in large part by Iraqis
deliberately shut out of the economy (...) Iraqis are fully aware of
American intentions. The people that birthed Western civilization refuses
to go quietly into colonial subjugation...

Veterans of Iraq war join forces to protest US invasion
Marcella Bombardieri, Globe Staff
A year and a half ago, Robert Sarra was a Marine sergeant in Iraq, where,
he says, he once fired his M-16 at a black-cloaked old woman wh! o failed
to stop when she was told. Instead of a suicide bomb, the bundle she
carried to her death held only bread, tea, and a white flag. From that day
in a tiny town called Ash Shatra, Sarra says, he journeyed through dark
territory -- heavy drinking, violent outbursts, therapy -- and finally from
his temporary job in Chicago to the Republican National Convention this
week. It is in New York that he embraced his new role -- peace activist...

In God, and terror, we trust
Pepe Escobar
The war in Iraq is part of the "war on terra". You're either with us,
Republicans, or with the terrorists. Be afraid. Be very afraid. And count
on us to deliver you from fear - somewhat! . Fear not what you can do to
support us, fear for the world if you don't. This, in essence, is the
Republican platform for "four more years" of the president of permanent war
(...) Both Iraq and Afghanistan are under martial law. Their governments
can only survive because they are protected by US troops - and mercenaries.
"Democracy", anyone? Who cares? In God - and terror - we trust to keep us
indefinitely in power...

20 Iraqis, including three childrean, killed in US attack on Fallujah
AFP
...Rescue workers had pulled 20 bodies from the rubble by Thursday morning
as bulldozers cleared wreckage and a crowd dug through the debris and
searched! for body parts and bits of flesh, said rescue worker Hossam
Ibrahim. "All the wounded are families. Among the dead, there could be two
or three children but the bodies are torn to pieces and it's difficult to
tell," Doctor Doctor Seifeddin Taha of the Fallujah general hospital told
AFP late Wednesday. Two giant craters gouged the ground, leaving one house
completely destroyed and another badly damaged. The blast knocked down
several palm trees and smashed up furniture and television could be seen in
the wreckage...

Debate between Chomsky and Cohen
Axis of Logic
Noah Cohen (New England Committee to Defend Palestine) challenged Noam
Chomsky in his 8/23/04 critical analysis: Noam Chomsky and 'Left'
Apologetics for Injustice in Pale! stine (originally published on Axis of
Logic). Cohen's challenge goes to the heart of the horrific conditions
faced by the Palestinian people every day. Until Cohen opened this debate,
the "Left" - so-called, has dominated the discussion in the Corporate Media
and in large sectors of the Alternative Media, presenting a "two-state
solution" as the only realistic alternative for Palestine. Chomsky took
Cohen's critique seriously enough to respond in an article titled: Advocacy
and Realism: A reply to Noah Cohen (published on ZNet and posted on Axis of
Logic). Noah Cohen's reply to Chomsky's defense is published below...

Chalabi, Claiming Exoneration, Plans Another Comeback
SABRINA TAVERNISE, NYTimes
In his first public appearance since an Iraqi judge ordered his arrest
three weeks ago, the Iraqi exile Ahmad Chalabi announced his return to
Iraq! 's political scene on Wednesday, saying that criminal charges against

Norman Solomon, Nuovi Mondi Media
all'autoerotismo che non all'auto-flagellazione.

A defeat for the U.S. in Najaf?
Socialist Worker
...The increasing problem for the U.S. is that Najaf is one of several "hot
spots" threatening to boil over. While U.S. commanders were worried about
Sadr in Najaf, U.S. warplan! es bombed Falluja, where the Marines had to
retreat last spring. The U.S. has all but withdrawn from the Sunni city of
Samarra, north of Baghdad, and fighting is continuing in the town of
Baqubah. There will be no peace or justice for ordinary Iraqis until the
U.S. gets out...

Liberi sette ostaggi Strage Usa a Falluja
bambini, e ferendone in modo grave altri cinque.
