The Convention: a European flop

As Giscard d'Estaing presents the European Council in Thessaloniki with the
Convention on the Future of Europe's draft constitution, café babel casts a
critical eye over the past 15 months. What has become of the democratic
deficit ? Why did some aspects not work as expected ? The 'Euro-generation'
is launching the debate with one eye on the future; there is still much to
be done.

Spreading legitimacy too thin?
One of the most important aims of the Convention is to ensure that its
institutions become more relevant to people. But can this be achieved at
the same time as providing a basis for an enlarged Union?

Not out of the woods yet
A few steps in the right direction have been made but Europe has not yet
found enough strength to solve all of its problems. It will be up to our
generation to provide the final burst of speed.

Two steps forward, one step back
The European constitution: a tentative and half-hearted product of
compromise. Farewell simplicity, foreign policy and sheer daring!

It is high time that the Euro-generation flexed their political muscles
The Convention has been a flop. But failure has less to do with political
issues and more to do with differences between the mindsets of the older
and the younger generations.
Adriano Farano (Paris)

The forgotten democracy
2/3 or 3/5? For Giscard & Co "this is the question". Is it not more
interesting to know what role and weight citizens will have in the future
of Europe?
Nicola Dell'Arciprete (Roma)
