E tante volte l’abbiamo incontrata in Pakistan.

Potrete contattarla direttamente o mio tramite.

Bilquis Tahira

Dear Laura and Cristina,

Hope you are both doing well.

Sorry for the long absence.

This time i am writing to you because we in Pakistan are now facing a war like situation. The conflict in the North between the military and the Talibans has reached a peak and the military is calling for civilian evacuation of parts of Swat before bombing the place
At the same time, the Talibans are trying to limit the movements of civilians and there are indications that some of the roads have been mined.
This looks to be a very similar situation to Sri Lanka with the difference that we are talking about a bigger scale (3 or 4 times that at least)
There has been an influx of 30,000 IDP families just in the last day from Dir and Buner in Peshawar and there is an estimate of around 500,000 IDPs in the coming days and many will be coming to Rawalpindi and Islamabad. There is lack of basic things such as quilts/blankets, shoes, shelter and clothes. Women's needs such as hygiene kits and other concerns take a back seat as there is not much gender integration of issues around.

What we have been doing (4 volunteers and i) are making contact with IDPs in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, some with host families and others in rented buildings (8 people to a room on average) and trying to help women with their immediate needs.  There are however long term needs as well.

We would like to expand our activities and I am requesting you to identify any organisation in Italy who could fund the relief and rehabilitation activities particularly where women's needs are concerned.  Do let me know as the situation is getting out of hand and even with donors getting together on this, there are still pockets that are not getting attention such as IDPs in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

I have also been attending humanitarian team meetings (UN agencies, other donors and NGOs) and am attaching a few sitreps.

Take care and
